The Righteous Among the Nations
Ty Brock 5th Period
The Righteous Among the Nations is the honorary title given to non-Jews by the government of Israel in thanks for their sheltering of Jews during the Nazi Holocaust. The members of this group came from all walks of life. However, all of them were willing to risk their lives to protect the innocent from the bloodthirsty Third Reich. The Righteous worked all throughout the reign of Adolf Hitler. Their refusal to obey the bigoted, racist Nazi law saved the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees.

Connection to Thoreau's Civil Disobedience
Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" details Thoreau's thoughts on government role and corruption. The conditions of his time caused him to advocate for transgression of the laws he thought of as morally wrong. Thoreau says,"Unjust laws exist: shall we be content to obey them ... or shall we transgress at once?" The Righteous Among the Nations saw the evil of Hitler's Nazi policies and took a stand against them by illegally harboring Jews. Their disobedience often times cost them their lives. They took Thoreau's ideas to their graves - they could not stand by and ignore the injustice of the Nazi regime just as Thoreau could not allow the continuation of poll taxes.
