The Gower Gazette
Week 26- March 22, 2019
In The News...
Our literacy focus has been on fairy tales and understanding their story elements. We know that fairy tales being with Once upon a time or Long, long ago. We also know there is good vs evil, magic, things grouped in 3s or 7s and lots more. The kids got to hear 3 fairy tales written by my past students and next week we will start writing our own that we will share at our Storybook Ball (in June). It's going to be awesome! I can't wait.
We have been working on informational writing during Writer's Workshop. The kids finished their "All Abouts" for bald eagles and have been gathering info on the animal they chose to do their research project on. Their packets with the information they've found will go home next week for you guys to use on their projects. Please keep them in a safe place. Questions came up about the costumes for our zoo. Again, you don't have to purchase anything; they can surely be made at home with materials you have, but if you'd like to buy a costume you can. That is totally up to you. Let me know if you have any questions. Don't forget that projects will be due on May 20th and our zoo will be on May 24th in the morning from 9:30-12:15. It is floating, meaning the classes will be in and out of our classroom to see the "animals" and learn about them. You are welcome to stop in anytime between this block to check it out if you'd like.
The kids have been super excited to add to their learning portfolios and prepare these to share with you during Student-Led conferences. Remember, I will only be meeting with you for about 10 min. and the remainder of the conference will done by your child. There will be about 4 conferences happening at the same time. You will need to make sure your child attends the conference and that you bring headphones for each person participating as there will be videos and audios that your child will share with you. Let me know if you have any questions about this conference format.
The excitement was on for Social Studies as Mrs. Tuttle visited and we began creating our "My Maps" in Google. The kids loved putting in their address and seeing their house on Google Satellite view. It was pretty amazing. They even got to see the school. Next week we will create a My Maps of our community. Mrs. Tuttle will be back to help us with this.
We had a Skype today all the way in Wyoming. The kids learned about the Plain Indians and why the buffalo were so important to their survival. It was a great example of wants and needs. Ask your child about this experience!
Science sure does rock these days. The kids loved sifting our rock mixture and discovering which rocks were sand, gravel, and/or pebbles. They did a great job of sharing and working together. We are learning how to record our observations just like scientist do. They learned this week that sand is a type of rock. Next week we will take a closer look at sandpaper.
See how busy we've been!! Lots going on for sure! I hope you all have a terrific weekend.
Take Care,
Ms. Gower

Notes~
- Student-Led Conferences- These begin next week. Everyone is signed up and I sent a confirmation sheet home with your child. There is also a reminder of when yours is inside the Friday Folder comments section. Please be on time as there will be about 4 conferences occurring at the same time. Each conference is staggered by 10 min which will allow me the opportunity to meet with you before your child begins his/her part. I can't wait for the kids to share their learning portfolios with you! Make sure you bring headphones so you can listen to the videos and audios!!!
- Wax Museum- Be sure to read the "In the Classroom" section for info on costumes and research your child has gathered.
- About the Author- We are going to begin writing our fairy tales for our Storybook Ball (which happens at the end of the year). One part of your child's book is the About the Author page. This is an important piece to your child's book. A sheet will come home for homework next week. Be sure to complete this (not your child). I will be typing these up to put in the back of their published book. The more you share, the more there will be; these are very special to your child.
- Easter Egg Hunt- It is tradition in my classroom to have an Easter Egg Hunt. It's exciting and fun. We are asking each child to bring in 24 or more pre-filled eggs for this hunt (no peanut products please). Our egg hunt will be on Wednesday, April 17th. I will need volunteers to help hide our eggs at 12:45. The kids will begin the egg hunt at 1:10. It usually is super fast, but lots of fun. Please let me know if you can come help.
- Share & Vote for Me =) - Voting is still going on for this contest. I am honored to be nominated and would love your vote; if you feel up to it. Feel free to share the link on your social media outlets as well as with family and friends. Here's the link: https://nclgivingjoy.com/voteme/30373/632415939 Thank you!
