Nassau Notebook
Recording Outstanding Education
Volume III, No. 10
Nassau County School District continues to have positive events occurring on our campuses. Take a look at some of the things that have happened recently.
Appreciating the Arts
Students at Emma Love Hardee Elementary have been exploring their creative talents through the Arts Alive! program. The young artists have enjoyed each class!
Could You Escape Earth's Processes?
Mr. Bozeman, at Fernandina Beach Middle School, proposed a challenge for his learners. He designed a science-themed escape room on Earth's Processes. Using the 5 R's, the students have to be resourceful and resilient as they answered questions about Earth Processes (Rocks, Weathering, Plate Tectonics) as well as solve puzzles for each locked room. His 3rd period students worked together so that they could escape. Did they escape? Don't worry about the teacher - he was able to get through each room with NO problem!
Helping Harmony
Emma Love Hardee Elementary's students and staff have implemented a new tool for their PBIS model. Sanford Harmony is a social-emotional learning program for PreK-6th grade students designed to foster communication, connection, and community both in and outside the classroom. This program is developed to assist in creating young children grow into compassionate and caring adults.
Hornet Pride
The Yulee High CTE Department proudly show their We Are Nassau pride!

Alien Invasion
The 5th-grade students at Wildlight Elementary have been studying the solar system and figured our how Area 51 is similar to Wildlight Elementary. Each student was given a planet on which to do deeper research. After completing the research, students created aliens and provided them with passports. A few aliens have stuck around because they plan to visit the Shrimp Festival. It is easy to see that their learning was out of this world!
Civic Duties
All students at Callahan Middle School participated in the democratic process. Student Council candidates campaigned with signs around campus. Candidates also filmed a one-minute speech that was viewed during homeroom periods. Finally, students came to the cafeteria to vote during their Social Studies classes.
Bookkeepers
Congratulations to our District's 2018-2019 Outstanding Bookkeepers that were recognized at a recent School Board Meeting!

Skeleton Snacks
The Kindergarten students in Mrs. Ballard's classroom at Wildlight Elementary School found a delicious way to study their bones. Mrs. Ballard’s shook & rattled their bones with this fun skeleton activity! The students used special bone-shaped Cheetos to sort and categorize each bone type before labeling and building a skeleton. The extra bones were eaten as a snack. No funny bones about this learning!

Learning, Living, and Livestock
The Hilliard Middle-Senior High School FFA Club recently claimed 1st and 2nd place during the Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE). During the event, students worked within teams to rank breeding and market classes of beef, sheep, and swine and give oral reasons to back up their decisions. This CDE also encourages students to communicate proficiently, interpret data and work as a team — skills that translate into other career opportunities.
Students in FFA complete SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experiences) as part of the yearly membership. For many students, this involves a year of record-keeping, animal caretaking, management, business skills, budgeting, losses, and gains!
Jesslynn Martin took home the Grand Champion Steer Ribbon, which was later purchased by Four Rivers Farms. Jennifer Martin's steer was purchased by Traders Hill Farm. Because of continued support and people having the desire for locally sourced meat and sustainability the chapter is able to help students have success in their small businesses.
Paras Making a Buzz
Yulee Elementary School's Paraprofessionals participated in two Make-and-Take workshops to create engagement boxes to use during their small group instruction.
Rockin' the 50th Day
Southside Elementary School's Staff and Students celebrated the 50th Day of School in true 50's style. Learning activities and lessons celebrated the 50 days of learning that has already happened this school year.
