McKinley Monthly
February 2022
Hello McKinley Community!
Once again you can read this, or watch or listen to me at this YouTube Link!
It is February! As I was preparing for this month’s remarks, I couldn’t help but notice that there seems to be a little something for everyone! Every February we celebrate Black History Month, and this year we opened the month also with the Lunar New Year Celebration: welcome to the year of the tiger! Right now the Super Bowl Food Drive is in full swing, with the Bengals edging out the Rams so far. Remember to get those non-perishable items in by February 11th! Along with the Super Bowl, Winter Olympics, Friendship Day, and 100th Day, some kids are excited about Winter Walk to School Day, McKinley’s opportunity to host an upcoming Chess Tournament, a Sports and Clubs Spirit Day, and Kids Trivia Night! I’m sure there is more, but wow! So much to learn about, watch, prepare for, and do!
Conferences are also this month--if you haven’t signed up yet and wish to have time with your child’s grade level teacher or any of our specials teachers in person or via Zoom, please sign up on the Sign Up Genius links here. If you desire a conference, but none of the dates or times work for you, please contact the teacher or teachers you want to see and they will be happy to schedule a time.
Our fifth graders had a visit from middle school counselors this week, and they went to First Stage for a live performance of The Watsons go to Birmingham. It has been a long time since these students have been on a field trip! It feels like a little bit of normality returning. To give our fifth graders leadership opportunities, we have engaged them in helping as door greeters, announcement makers, Pledge leaders, and Food Drive support! Thanks fifth graders for your contributions to the McKinley community!
Please visit this link for the weekly DISTRICT NEWS. You will find lots of good information and opportunities, including vaccination clinics, free COVID testing for students and families, a free Implicit Bias presentation with Judge Derek Mosley coming up on February 21st, Parents United events, ESSER III engagement meetings, and information about enrolling in district STEM options.
Have a wonderful February everyone! With so much going on, I think this month will fly by!

Happy February! This month, I think it’s important to continue the focus on helping kids to identify their feelings and let them know that any feeling is okay to have. I love this visual of ways that students can use the pictures to help describe their feelings and adults can model it too. You can also sit down with your child and make your own poster with them. Ask “what color would your feeling be if you gave it a color?” or “what size problem or feeling does it feel like?”, etc. Have fun with it!
Donation items needed:
New or gently-worn waterproof winter gloves (especially sizes to fit SK-3rd)
Emergency snacks-individually packaged (suggestions include: Goldfish or Cheez-It crackers, fruit snacks, pretzels)
If you have anything to donate, please send it to the office with your child and mark the package with my name (Ms. Kumferman) Thank you in advance!
Welcome to McKinley!
Hello! My name is Natalie Gryniewicz and I am excited to be student teaching in 2nd grade at McKinley. I am majoring in Elementary Education and Psychology at Marquette University and will graduate this spring. I am originally from Burlington, WI, but grew up in Sammamish, WA (just outside of Seattle). Coming back to Milwaukee and now getting to teach here feels very full circle for me. I am passionate about bringing creativity into the classroom and life through art and music. Outside of the classroom, I love to hike, travel, sing, and volunteer in the Milwaukee community. I am looking forward to all I will learn at McKinley!
Thank You Library Volunteers!
Many hands make light work! You are an amazing crew!

Welcome to McKinley!
Hello McKinley Elementary! My name is Emma Wick and I have the opportunity to student teach in Mrs. Petitt’s kindergarten classroom this term. I am currently studying elementary education and special education, and have a minor in art, at Carroll University. Student teaching is my last step before receiving my teaching credentials, and graduating in May! In April I will be switching over to Whitman Middle School to complete my special education teaching requirements.
I am from Oconomowoc, and have two younger brothers one is enlisted in the Navy, and the other is a senior in high school. I have a border collie puppy, her name is Izzy and she is the sweetest little thing. I am a fourth generation educator, and have lots of inspiring educators in my family! In my free time I like to hangout with my friends, binge watch shows, play ball with Izzy, and spend time with my family! I am so excited to have the opportunity to be a part of the McKinley community!
