Tundra
The tundra is the coldest of all biomes. The tundra is seperated into two types: Artic Tundra and the Alpine Tundra. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus.
The Characteristics of the Tundra
*Extremly cold climate * Low Biotic Diversity * Simple vegetation structure * Limitation of drainage * Short seasons of growth and reproduction * Energy and nutrients in the form of dead orgaanic material *Large population oscillations
Tundra
The artic tundra is located in the northern hemisphere. It has cold desert like conditions. Growing season rages from 50 to 60 days. The average winter tempature is -34 c . The average summer tempature is 3 - 12 c. There are 1,700 kinds of plants.
Plants in the Artic
*low shurbs, sedges, reindeer mosses, liverworts, and grasses * 400 varieties of flowers* crustose and folrose lichen
Plants
These plants are adapted to winds and disturbances of the soil. plants are short and group together to help survie the cold and are protected by the snow.
Animals in the tundra
*Herbivorous mammals: lemmings, voles, caribou, arctic hares, and squirrels Carnivorous mammals: arctic foxes, wolves, and polar bears Migratory birds: ravens, snow buntings, falcons, loons, sandpipers, terns, snow birds, and different species of gulls Insects: mosquitoes, flies, moths, grasshoppers, black flies, and arctic bumble bees Fish: cod, flatfish, salmon, and trout
Animals in the tundra
Animals adapt to survive long, cold winters and to feed and raise their young. All sorts of animals such as mammals and birds that have additional fat. Lots of animals hibernate in the winter because their is not enough food. Birds fly from one place to the other depending on the weather. Lizards and Amphibians are used to the cold because they are cold blooded.
Arctic bee
They help other animals adapt to the hard conditions
Arctic Hares
These hares do not hibernate
Arctic salmon
This type salmon need more time at the sea bed than the sea.
