Name that Mascot
There was a recent conversation about school mascot, who we call bulldog puppy, and the fact that he does not have a name. So, we have asked our students to help us out. Over the next few weeks, students will be nominating names for our school Mascot. We will have the top four names after this week. Students will vote on January 29th. I will keep you posted on the progress.
Science Fair Family Night
Due to some scheduling conflicts, we have went virtual with our Science Fair Family Night scheduled for Monday, January 11th. Instead of having a face to face meeting, we have posted the video on our school Facebook page to assist with preparation for our upcoming science fair. All 3rd students are required to complete and project while 1st and 2nd graders have the option to do a project. You can also watch the video by clicking on the link below. The first 50 people to watch and complete the survey will receive a free Science Fair Board. We hope you find this beneficial.

What's Going on in Classrooms at BSE
In one first grade classroom, I observed a teacher guiding a discussion about a timeline of events of someone's life. The students had read a book and the teacher modeled the use of illustrations to help sequence the events. As a result, the teacher had them to apply what they had learned to create their own timeline. You have to kind of think of it as a gradual release of responsibility or GRR. You model for them and let them go. The more we try to SHOW them, the less time they have to learn by doing.
I looked up this concept and found this definition:
Learning-by-doing is a concept in economic theory by which productivity is achieved through practice, self-perfection and minor innovations. Take a look at the image in this section. How often to we rob our students of opportunities to learn by doing because we use up this time trying to explain, show, or tell them something. This makes me think of our faculty meetings. I have more time into prepping for those meeting, with preparing notes, so that more time is given for you to learn by doing in some of the stations. Over the next few weeks, we are going to explore this concept more. As you are planning your lessons, be mindful of providing students with hands on experience to learn by doing. Keep in mind that this is not referencing a worksheet as doing......let it involve all of their senses, creating, problem solving, etc.....
