School doors will be locking at 9:15 am. If you drop your child off in the mornings you will need to arrive BEFORE 9:15 a.m. According to the Sycamore Student Handbook, "The regular instructional day for a K-4 school begins at 9:15 a.m. Students arriving after 9:15 a.m. but before 10:15 a.m. will be considered tardy. Students who are tardy need to report to the office with a parent to receive a tardy slip before going to their classroom." Thank you for your cooperation.
Update on Student Curbside Pickup at Maple Dale
Our pick-up procedures are in place and we are enjoying the new system of bringing students to parents at the curb.
This last week, our time has improved and we are getting students out to cars in “batches” of ten. We feel that we can safely load ten cars at one time.
Our practice is to not bring any children out until the cars in each batch have come to a complete stop.
On Wednesday, November 15, (a rainy dreary day) we had a record number of cars and were able to load everyone safely by 4:02 pm.
Reminders:
Please help your child memorize his or her car tag number.
Please make sure your car tag is hanging in your mirror before you enter car line as we write numbers for each “batch” while you are waiting.
Please leave a space for visitors visiting the District Offices to enter and exit the parking lot.
Please allow the daycare vans to pass to the left as they make their way to the designated parking spots in the front of our school.
We appreciate all the patience you have shown as we make this change.

View the available days and sign up for whatever works for your schedule. There is no obligation and any help is appreciated!
ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPTIONAL TESTING FOR IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS
You may request your child be tested on the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT). If you wish to have your child participate in this round of testing, all requests must be made through the below online link by December 6th. If you have a child in 2nd and/or 4th grade, they will take the test during school with their class. For other grade levels, we are offering an optional testing opportunity. In order to decrease disruption to your child's instruction, this testing opportunity will take place on Saturday, December 9, at Maple Dale from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm for all four elementary buildings.
Please note it is the parents' responsibility to provide transportation to and from Maple Dale on morning of testing. Also please note Sycamore cannot use kindergarten or first grade scores for gifted placement.
Maple Dale Peacebuilders: Helping Children Praise People
Dear: Maple Dale Parent and Guardian:
This month, we are working on the first principle of Peacebuilders, which is “Praise People.” What does “Praise People” mean? First, our staff promises to set a good example at our school. We praise your students for behaviors that make Maple Dale such a peaceful place and acknowledge students for positive behavior. As a school, we are also acknowledging one another for Praising veterans, performers, staff, students and community members.
Why do we do this? WE believe that praise encourages each of us to try harder and accomplish more. If we do not praise students, then they may not know when they’re doing well. In fact, many children maybe think they are making mistakes if they don’t receive praise. AS we all know, children need attention. If we don’t give attention when they exhibit positive behavior, they are more likely to act inappropriately to get the attention.
Here are some ways we are “Praising People” at Maple Dale this Month…
Veteran’s Day cards and Pictures- We honor and praise our veterans for all they did and do for our country! Our students and teachers are working on different activities to praise our Veterans this month.
Performer Praise-Our 3rd Graders will be performing November 30th at 7:00pm for our community and we want to be able to praise our young performers with notes and clapping hands.
Family and Community Praise-Family is a huge deal with our wonderful students and they want to praise their wonderful and supportive families, so you will be seeing some different cards and things coming home as well as lots of hugs and high fives!
PraiseNotes and Secret Praise notes- Students will be working with building friendships using written communication of encouragement and praise throughout the day!
Video Announcements- This month, we will be performing different skits about Praising people throughout Maple Dale. We will be using students and staff members to incorporate the true meaning of praise and how it makes you feel.
What can you do at home?
Talk to your child about how these ideas are similar to what we do as adults. Writing a PraiseNote is similar to writing a thank you letter or doing a favor for a neighbor who helped you. Tell your child about times when you have been praised: perhaps your boss complimented your work or your co-workers thanked you for helping them. Talk about how the praise made you feel. Be sure to notice times when your child says nice things and praises you.
Praising people helps us focus on the positive things we do to help one another in life. By praising children for their successes and good deeds, we teach them that their actions and efforts make a difference.
As always, Maple Dale thanks the wonderful and amazing parents, guardians, and community for building peace everyday.
Peacefully yours,
The Maple Dale Staff!

Praise At Home
This activity will help families acknowledge and give positive praise for desired behaviors at home.
What You Need:
- Construction Paper
- Markers
How This Activity Works:
1. As a family, brainstorm a list of desired behaviors that the family could work on.
2. The children make a sign or poster each week or month that encourages the types of things you want praised at home.
3. For example: “Wise parents praise PeaceBuilders for being ready for dinner,”or “PeaceBuilders say Thank You to their parents,”“Wise parents praise
PeaceBuilders for doing their homework.”
Good News Notes
This activity will help children practice praising other people. Caring is being
kind, compassionate, loving and considerate. The use of Good News Notes exemplifies these traits.
What You Need:
-Good News Notes (located in Praise People Section)
-Markers
How This Activity Works:
1. Once a week, help your child pick someone to praise.
2. Your child can praise his or her teacher, a relative, a family member, or a friend.
3. Brainstorm a list of things your child could praise people for.
Examples: “Thank you for helping me with my homework because it helps me
do better in school.” or “Thank you for playing with me.”
Green Team Tip of the Week
You may have noticed that Maple Dale now has a sidewalk that runs behind the school and a bike rack up front, making the school easily accessible by bike or foot for a large portion of the Maple Dale population. On a nice day, consider biking or walking the kids to school. The outdoor activity will be a great way to start their day! Stopping in to volunteer or have lunch with your kids? Why not bike or walk instead of drive? Attending an all school family event and don't want to deal with the crazy parking? Yes, biking or walking might be the answer. (Any kids who bike or walk to school MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult.)
