South Central Middle School
We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from our JH
In January, students in Mrs. Oney’s Multimedia 7th & 8th grade classes practiced their camera skills as they photographed and edited photos of spirit week and the pep rally. Students have learned to use a script editor to write code for a slideshow using Applied Digital Skills with Google. In February, students began to build their own Google Site using Canva to create a logo and website banners for each webpage. Students are adding entries to their blog page on their Google Site, following a lesson using Applied Digital Skills with Google. At the end of this school year, each student’s Google Site will serve as an electronic portfolio of their projects in middle school. Students may continue to use their Google Site into their high school years and beyond. More recently, students are using iMovie to import footage, split clips, add titles, music and transitions to create a promotional video announcing South Central’s upcoming Dinner Theatre shows, which are scheduled for March 22 and 23. Students in Mrs. Oney’s tech team classes use their skills to keep our homework page up-to-date. Some members of the tech team collect, scan and upload homework assignments. Other members of the tech team type in the daily assignment from each teacher and publish it to our Weebly homework page at http://southcentraltrojans.weebly.com/. After the homework is published to the web, tech team members send out the Remind App messages that represent the assignments. If you’d like to sign up for homework text messages or the Remind app messages, visit https://www.mrsoneyscomputerlab.com/remind-app.html for more information. In other news, students in Mrs. Oney’s tech team classes are almost ready to celebrate the 100th published segment of Trojan News Today, our video announcements. Members of TNT take on the roles of anchor, reporter, scriptwriter, editor, weatherman, and cameraperson as they put the news together for the day. Members of the tech team are using Canva to design website banners, logos, business cards and name badges for future use. Recently, students on the tech teams have created “tech tip” explainer videos using Screencastify that they hope to share with others to show that Technology can be EASY!
Science
Students in Mr. Oney’s 7th grade science classes have been studying biomes and the atmosphere this semester. Students in 8th grade science have been learning about genetics and evolution. Recently, the 8th graders took a day off of learning science in class to sample some sloppy does. The sloppy does were cooked by Mr. Oney and were given as a reward for the 8th graders reaching their canned food drive goal before Christmas break. Mr. Oney prepared the sloppy doe using his secret recipe. Students brought in chips, buns, pop, manwich, plates, napkins, cups, and desserts. A good time was had by all.
Mathematics
I wanted to send out a reminder that students have access to their text books online and that the online text is a great resource for students to use. There are short videos for every lesson that we have done, which might help explain the lesson over when students get home. They can also take practice quizzes and tests for each chapter we are working on. The links to the online texts are as follows and students were already given a username and password to log in:
Math 7, Math 8 and Acc Math 7: https://my.mheducation.com/login
Algebra: https://www.pearsonrealize.com/index.html#/
We are also using a program online called IXL. We are not only using this program for Math but for Reading and Language Arts. Students have been given assignments from myself, Mrs. Richards and Mrs. Adams that will be included in their grades. We have been trying to encourage students to go on and practice the recommended skills to help increase fluency in areas that students are deficient in. The link to log in is ixl.com/signin/sctrojans.
Lastly, I would like to encourage students to work on fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers. This will really help students with their confidence in math. Students who are fluent in math have an easier time understanding more difficult concepts because they can focus on the skill they are learning rather than the fluency aspect. Students can sign out flash cards from me, they can use a deck of cards or they can go to many online sites. Thank you for your help and for sharing your child with me!
