Voyager Family News
Summer 2020/July 27
Strand Spotlights and Info:
Dear Voyager Families,
We hope you are enjoying your summer and staying safe and healthy! We miss you and are working diligently to plan how we will learn together again in August!
We recognize there is ongoing uncertainty about the structure of school reopening. Our district is holding town hall meetings for each site this week to keep families informed of our plans to support students and staff when the school year starts in August and explain how the latest state guidelines inform our actions. Please join our SSES meeting on Thursday, July 23 at 10:30 AM via Zoom. More information about these meetings can be found in our district's July 17 newsletter here.

- Did you know that our district is contracting with a new childcare program this school year, called Champions? Last winter, Ms. Moore toured an elementary school with the Champions program and was impressed with their organization and variety of enriching activities. If you anticipate needing childcare before or after school this year, learn more about Champions here.
- Please register ASAP for School Year 2020-21 unless you are SURE your child will not be returning. We want to count you in, and plan for an amazing year of learning! Registration information is here.
Online registration is required for all returning and new CUSD students. Parents of returning and new students need to complete online registration by June 15th. The attached flyer provides registration instructions and links to view and download required registration documents. New this Year - Parents are now able to upload required documents while registering online. Parents of returning students are strongly encouraged to upload documents and by doing so will no longer be required to attend a registration completion day in August. Parents of new students are also encouraged to upload required documents but will still be required to attend a registration complete day in August by appointment only.
Ms. Moore will continue to stay in touch with families throughout the summer via our website, intermittent family newsletters, and Facebook.

Military Connections and Updates from SLO Mindy Hayes
Good afternoon NB Coronado Families –
As you all know, California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, held a Press Conference today focused on the reopening of CA schools. You can view the full video at https://youtu.be/OID_mhekY6I. To summarize:
1. Safe In-Person School Based on Local Health Data: Using health data, schools can physically open when its county has been OFF the monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. Schools that do not meet this requirement MUST begin the year distance learning. Currently, 32 counties (out of 58 total counties) to include LA, San Diego, Fresno, Kings, Ventura, Monterey are on the monitoring list.
2. Mask Requirements: All school staff and students in 3rd grade and above must wear masks. Students in 2nd grade and below are encouraged to wear masks or face shields.
3. Physical Distancing & Other Adaptations: Adults must maintain 6 ft. between each other and with students. Students should maintain 6 feet distance from one another as practicable. Health screenings for anyone entering the school. If exhibiting a fever or other symptoms will be immediately sent home. The guidance also provides that if anyone in a student or staff member’s household is sick, they too should stay home.
4. Testing and Contact Tracing: Requirement to test staff regularly; state contact tracing workface will prioritize schools.
5. Rigorous Distance Learning: New statewide learning law requires school districts to provide:
a. Access to devices and connectivity for all kids
b. Daily live interactions with teachers and other students
c. Challenging assignments equivalent to in-person instruction
d. Targeted supports and interventions for English learners and special education students
Guidance as to when in-person learning should close:
- Schools should consult with a public health officer first.
- A classroom cohort goes home when there is a confirmed case.
- A school goes home when multiple cohorts have cases or more that 5% of school is positive.
- A district goes home if 25% of their schools are closed within a 14-day period.
All of the information and guidance can be found on the CA Department of Public Health website: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/CDPH%20Document%20Library/COVID-19/Schools%20Reopening%20Recommendations.pdf
I am sure this brings up a lot of emotions and concerns for families. Rest assured, each of the three school districts I work with are dedicated to providing the highest level of instruction possible, whether that be in-person or online. They are diligently working to improve the process of delivery with increased accountability, consistency and equity to provide our students with the quality of education in which they deserve. A promising statement I heard from a school district administrator this week, “Last Spring was emergency teaching, while this Fall will be true distance learning,” gives me hope that the distance learning will be much better due to the wealth of knowledge learned from our whirlwind experiences when school’s closed last March.
Please frequently check your district’s website for the latest information on the start of school and do not hesitate to reach out to myself, your school principal, or district team member with questions or to raise a concern.
I wish you a beautiful and relaxing weekend! J
