Principal's Update
ROMS Families~
What a great start to a new school year! It's clear that kids worked hard over the summer, keeping their minds sharp. And judging from the tales of adventure and relaxation, our extended break did the body good as well.
It was an honor to host so many of you at Curriculum Night last week. Any opportunity, formal or otherwise, I have to talk about these kids is one I relish. I did not fail to notice a certain common theme develop as the night progressed. It's a theme of which I am aware every single day and never take for granted: We are all extremely fortunate to have these ROMS teachers on our team. Groups of educators like this don't just happen. These educators push each other, support each other, and work hard for our students every single day. It’s going to be a great year!
Looking ahead, here are a few dates for you to keep in mind:
October 2: Dawg Walk (3-5pm) - 4 days left to get donations submitted via thegetmovincrew.com or envelope returned to LEAP teacher. Our goal is $25,000 in contributions. HERE is our progress so far.
October 7: Count Day
October 8: 1st ROMS Parent Workshop Series session - Building the “Home-Work” Environment. RSVP HERE.
October 12: Picture retake day
October 21 & 22: ROMS Parent-Teacher Conferences (4-7pm)
October 29: ROMS Orchestra Concert (7pm)
It’s not too early to think about 6th grade camp or the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip. I am committed to including as many students as possible in these tremendous opportunities by removing any barriers from participation.
Important Dates
October 8 - Parent Series: "How to create a 'HOME-work' environment." Light dinner @ 6pm followed by discussion from 6:30 - 8:00pm.
October 12 - Picture Retake Day
October 19 - ROMS PTA Meeting, 7:00pm
October 21-22 - Parent / Teacher conferences, 4:00 - 7:00pm
October 29 - ROMS Orchestra concert, 7:00pm
Dawg Walk
Our inaugural Dawg Walk hassle-free fundraiser is in its final stretch. Check out the progress of donations that have come in through the fundraiser website HERE. (Checks made out to the “ROMS PTA” will also be accepted by LEAP teachers.) The PTA’s goal is for every student to raise $25 by reaching out to families and other loved ones. The more a student raises, the better the chance the student will go home with fun stuff, like a 32-inch Sony television and Beats headphones!

Character Education at ROMS
The ROMS Way: We are at our best always
An essential aspect of the educational process is the opportunity to build skills that cannot be measured by homework or tests. During our LEAP classes, our learners will experience character-infused activities targeting many “Non-academic Skills” such as empathy, persistence, self-advocacy, growth mindsets, digital citizenship, executive functioning, and social/emotional skills. A focus on creating the ROMS Way with our students includes a concerted effort in reinforcing non-academic skills that will serve our learners well past the end of their school-age years.
The ROMS Way speaks to our goal of complementing traditional academic skills with character traits and attitudes. Building-wide attention to both skill sets creates a climate of positive messages encouraging all our learners to be at their personal best always.
The Dog Days
During the opening weeks of this school year, our students and teachers have participated in back to school exercises called “Dog Days”. Formerly, Dog Days was an effort to ease the transition to middle school for our 6th grade learners. Our Character Education Team decided to broaden the Dog Days by providing opportunities to launch The ROMS Way expectations and include all students. Activities ranged from locker opening help for our 6th graders to conscientious cafeteria behavior to a reflective lesson on the effects of gratitude.
