"Oh! The Places We'll Go!"
WHAT'S NEW? (May 1, 2015)
Hi Parents,
After all the musical performances and field trips last week, we returned to our normal schedule this week. The students have been working hard to earn points in our Civil War simulation. (Our room has never been cleaner!) :)
Today, the students completed the first session of the Math End of the Year PARCC test. I am proud of their hard work and positive attitudes. Now that we all have been through the testing once, it does not seem as overwhelming as we once thought. Dates for the next two tests are:
Monday, May 11th: 10:20-11:50
Tuesday, May 12th: 10:20-11:50
Please try to schedule appointments around these times. Thanks!
Happy Weekend!

We finished up our lesson on quadrilaterals this week. We have tested and are moving on to our last chapters on three-dimensional shapes, surface area, and volume.
Please review your child's test, sign, and return it on Monday.

Reader's Workshop
This week in Reader's Workshop, the students read closely to learn more about the Civil War. They read about Johnny Clem, who was an 11 year old drummer boy, how half of the men died of sickness or disease, and how "Taps" originated. Did you know that in 1862 General Daniel Butterfield scribbled some notes on the back of an envelope and gave it to his bugler because he didn't like the original bugle call?
We also read a book called, "Thank you, Sarah." It is about how Sarah Hale saved Thanksgiving. She actually wrote thousands of letters to multiple presidents over the span of 20 years to help create this national holiday.
Students also performed a few plays to learn about soldier life, women in the Civil War, and the Battle of Gettysburg. Your children love to act and have almost perfected the Southern accent.

Social Studies
1863 is over! The North and South fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. It was considered the turning point of the Civil War. Lincoln gave his speech at Gettysburg four months later to dedicate the battlefield as a "final resting place". Your children have been working hard to memorize The Gettysburg Address. Ask them to recite it back to you! This week in Battle Jeopardy the North triumphed. Up next: 1864, Sherman's March to the Sea.
The students will be presenting their Archives projects on Monday, so be sure to send in all materials needed for this. Thanks!
