2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Falcon Families!
Before I launch into all the cool stuff coming up, I wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our amazing classified staff. Our classified staff includes our office staff, registrar, bilingual liaison, custodian staff, nutrition services, technology support, media assistant, bus driver, and maintenance crews! We are so grateful for all you do to make our school run smoothly!
March is here and it’s going to be busy! We have many events coming up this month - some specifically for students, others just for parents.
Forecasting season is here! Our 8th grade students need to complete their forecasting sheets by March 5. We are having an 8th grade Forecasting Fly-thru on March 4 from 4:30-6:30. Counselors and staff from Westview and Aloha will be here to help any future Wildcats or Warriors with forecasting questions and with completing the forms. This is an important step for next year! Our 6th and 7th grade students will spend time forecasting for next year on March 9th! We are excited to have them work with our staff in addition to staff from other middle schools to ensure they have all the information they need to make informed choices for the next school year!
We are going to launch a series of mental health nights to help give parents the tools and language to talk to your students about mental health questions and concerns. Upcoming parent events include:
March 4 - Mental Health and Middle School: An Overview
6:30-7:30
On Zoom:
Spanish translation
We will record and post to the website
Presenters: Heidi Elvidge, FOMS/RC School Psychologist, and Dana Sexton, FOMS/RC and CPMS Social Worker
QPR - Question, Persuade, Refer - is training designed specifically for parents to help parents talk to their students about warning signs the students has exhibited and then work to get students the help they need. QPR training is presented by licensed QPR trainers from Washington and Clackamas County Health Organizations free of charge to parents in those counties. We will have two QPR training opportunities, March 18 at 10 am, and one more session with a date to be determined that will be in the evening. Both dates and times will have concurrent Spanish and English zoom sessions so that families can learn in their preferred language.
Addiction and Mental Health sessions. These sessions are designed to help parents recognize the signs of addiction in adolescents and also the connection to mental health and how to seek help. These times and dates will have both Spanish and English sessions happening concurrently like the QPR sessions above. They will also be taught by mental health and addiction specialists from Washington County.
April 1 at 10:00 am.
Soon you will see an email from the school district about hybrid learning. I know everyone has many questions about what it will look like and how we will make it happen. Luckily for us, we have done a lot of planning for this already, so the changes we need to make are less than some other buildings. The email from BSD will include a video and survey link. The survey responses will be due March 15 and there will be a middle school specific information session on or around March 10. I am also looking at holding a FOMS/RC specific information session (tentative) March 11 or 12 - so stay tuned for more on that!
Have a great week everyone! As always please reach out with questions or concerns kelly_cox@beaverton.k12.or.us.
CARTA DE LA DIRECTORA
¡Familias Falcon!
- 6: 30-7: 30
