Edible Ecosystem--Coming to LaPerche--Who wants to help us plan this incredible outdoor space? Please join us on Monday, February 27 at 3:30 at LaPerche.
A little about out space from Chris-- Gardens are an interdisciplinary, hands-on opportunity to learn about our world. An Edible Ecosystem like the one we are planning for Laperche goes a step farther than your ordinary school garden. By mimicking the structure of natural environments, students will grow and interact with a food-producing ecosystem, learning about gardening, the environment, our health and how they are all related. Beyond those more practical benefits, these gardens also serve to address broader concerns such as local food security, environmental justice, and climate change. By creating a sustainable source of local food whilst generating a thriving healthy ecosystem, we are acting on all of those fronts. As a learning environment, we hope students will enjoy experiential learning in a natural setting and carry the lessons they learn here into their own lives.
Kindness Poem Deadline Approaching!!
At LaPerche, the word of the month is kindness and we have been spreading the love! LaPerche students were encouraged to participate in a Kindness Poem Contest put out by the Community Against Bullying IN Schools (CABINS). It is a great opportunity for students to focus on what kindness means to them and be creative!
Only grades 1-5 can submit to the group, but I would still encourage the kindergarten students to submit to the school. Take a look below for all the details and a link to the web page. Submission deadline for us is MARCH 3!! Students need to submit their poems by Monday, February 27. The submissions we have received so far are truly beautiful and heartfelt!
From the website:
The Community Against Bullying IN Schools group (CABINS) is pleased to announce the 2017 Kindness Poem Contest . We would like to invite all students in your school to participate in this contest to reflect and write about spreading kindness in their community. Our purpose over the past 10 years has been to support Rhode Island schools' anti-bullying and kindness programs through kindness book donations, guest speaker and program funding, and promoting April Friends Day.
Our poem contest invites students to write about the message of spreading kindness through poetry. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top submissions from each category. We encourage each teacher in your school to select the most successful 3 poems in their class to submit by mail by the deadline.

Nook Contest--Read 20 minutes each day BEYOND the required school reading!! All forms signed by an adult are due Friday, March 24!!
Smithfield Public Schools, in partnership with the Horace Mann Companies, recently announced the “Read to Succeed” program for our students. It is simple, but, parents, we need you!
Each participating child is required to read an extra 20 minutes each day over and above their regularly-assigned school reading. Reading recording sheets have been sent home. If your child needs a new form, please let your classroom teacher know. Thank you!
Adults are asked to sign the sheet to verify that their child has read the required 20 minutes each day during the eight-week program. At the end of the eight weeks, students will submit the completed and signed task sheet to the main office at their school. Once submitted, students will be eligible for the NOOK drawing to be held the week of March 27, 2017. Forms are due to school by Friday, March 24 to be entered into the drawing!!
The winner of the LaPerche drawing is invited to a presentation ceremony at the Barnes and Noble in Smithfield on April 5, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. where he or she will receive the new Nook!
Read to Succeed is sponsored by Colleen Manuppelli of The Horace Man Companies and co-sponsored by Barnes and Noble in Smithfield and Navigant Credit Union. Thank you to these wonderful partners!
Many Upcoming Events--Please Sync to the LaPerche Calendar
In the bottom right-hand corner of the calendar is a +Google sign that you can click on to sync your calendar with the school calendar.
Would you like to stop in and have lunch with your child? Please know that you are always welcome to visit LaPerche to have lunch with your child. You do not need to let us know in advance. Kindergarten, first and second graders and Ms. Feeley's class eat at 11:45. Third, fourth and fifth graders and Ms. Bucci's class eat at 12:30.
Students in second grade made New Years cards for elderly residents of a local nursing home and have been engineers, building towers and bridges as part of their science kit, Solids and Liquids.
Students in the Kindergarten class celebrated the 100th Day by bringing in 100 things to share with the class. Some students created posters, brought in objects, and created 100th day shirts! We also celebrated with special 100th day themed centers. They built a 100 cup structure, counted to 100 during a math partner game, created art projects out of the numbers 1-0-0, and practiced counting by 10's by painting 100 gum balls with q-tips. Students also participated in a special 100 day marshmallow challenge! They had to use 50 toothpicks and 50 marshmallows to make a creation.
