Simile
Definition: a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thingof a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid by using like or as.
An example of a simile on page 44 in The Hunger Games is:
"The pair last year ate everything with their hands like a couple of savages."
Metaphor
Deffiniton:a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
An example of a metaphor on the second page of the most dangerous game is :
" The blood-warm waters of the caribbean sea closed over his head."
Personification
Definition: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
An example of personification in The Scarlet Ibis on the first page is:
"Summer was dead but autumn had not been born."
hyperbole
Definition:exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
An example of a Hyperbole on paragraph 17 in The Human Story Machine is :
" I give them something els : my ears, my eyes, my total 200-percent attention."
alliteration
Definition: the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent orclosely connected words.
An example Alliteration in The Scarlet Ibis on the first page is:
" The yard stands straight and spruce."
