A Note from Lisa
Hello CTE Friends!
It's October; we are fully in the fall season. In the last two months, I've had the pleasure to be out in many of our districts in all ten counties. A common theme is that this year is as hard or harder than last year. We were all so hopeful to have this year return to "normal," whatever that might mean to all of us. Our new normal has come with ongoing challenges that all of you are handling like champs! The bottom line is, no matter what is thrown at you, you are taking care of kids, and it's incredible.
In the whirlwind of fall in a school district, adjusting to changes, putting out fires that pop up, and providing an excellent education for over a half-million North Central Texas students, please remember to take care of yourselves. The term self-care is thrown around a lot these days, but each of you needs to decide what that means for you. For me, time genuinely engaging with family, relaxing in nature, and downtime playing with my puppies recharges my batteries. Whether hitting the gym, wandering a pumpkin patch, the Texas State Fair, or binging your favorite Netflix series, make time to recharge a priority each day. When our plates are full, we may feel guilty using precious minutes for these things, but we are all more productive and will be more positively engaged with our co-workers if we have a balanced life and stay healthy.
Taking my own advice, I will be away from the office October 7th -12th to return to my hometown, soak up some time with family, and see the colors of fall in Western New York. I will be back at the office on October 13th, recharged and ready to support you!
Best regards,
Lisa

Extra and Co-Curricular Project
The Extra and Co-Curricular (ECC) project was enacted by the 85th Texas Legislature to study the feasibility of incorporating student participation in ECC activities as part of the campus and district performance evaluation process. The ECC Advisory Committee, comprised of more than 30 districts, community, and organizational representatives from across the state, was established to review existing research and explore options. Since fall 2019, the committee has developed an initial list of possible indicators and gathered limited data from the 2019–20 and 2020–21 school years. Studying ECC participation is the first step to better understanding current levels of access, expanding definitions of student performance, and increasing awareness of the impact of ECC activities on student development.
As schools are returning to more typical levels of operation this year, the ECC committee is seeking additional districts to participate in a voluntary collection of student extra and co-curricular data during the 2021–22 school. Resources are available to assist districts with the data collection process, or districts may use their own systems. Gathering data from an increased number of districts representing a range of district types helps ensure the data collected provides an accurate picture of student participation across the state.
For more information, the ECC Invitation to Districts and ECC Data Collection Overview provide brief summaries of the project scope and timeline, including district time requirements. For additional questions, including available resources and how to get started, please contact Linda Johnson, ECC Project Coordinator.

Had you wondered about the make up of our great region?
Are you planning for future teachers?
Texas Teacher Shortage
COVID-19 has disrupted the pool of candidates for future needs with a predicted 23-27% deficit in College of Education graduates.
This is a great time to consider a Grow Your Own program, whether you apply for Grow Your Own Grants or choose to implement this as a local initiative. Teachers that come from your community and have ties locally can be a great asset to your organization!
Did you know that the typical American lives only 18 miles from Mom?
Overall, the median distance Americans live from their mother is 18 miles, and only 20 percent live more than a couple of hours' drive from their parents. (Researchers often study the distance from mothers because they are more likely to be caregivers and to live longer than men.)

ARISE Drone Challenge
We are currently preparing the kickoff for the first ARISE Drone Challenge. We are developing this competition as a high school-level engineering design team challenge. The tournaments will be in the spring of 2022. This fall, we will host virtual coaches’ clinics for interested teams. The first will be a Kickoff event where we will reveal the rules of the game and drone missions. The next three events will be coaches’ clinics to prepare the drone team coaches for the season. During these workshops, you will learn about the drone platform, more about the rules and missions, drone curriculum that you can use with your team, and even how to host a tournament in your area.
If you are interested in learning more about this competition, please contact DroneEd@smu.edu or watch for more announcements in other newsletters. Currently, we have four regions for the competitions: 1) Dallas, TX, 2) Chicago, IL, 3) New York and northeast, and 4) California and west. Each region has a coordinator who will be organizing the tournaments in the region.
I look forward to hearing from you!
