Mrs. Johnson's Journaling
This year we have added Lexia Core 5 Reading as another tool for our students and teachers. This computer program helps students work on their level to continue to learn and grow in their reading abilities. Our teachers are providing grade level reading instruction as well as small group work to help our students learn. Each Friday during morning announcements we recognize all the students who have passed a level that week. We call it Level Up Friday! The students' names are read over the announcements and students get a certificate to take home or display in their classroom. We are so proud of how hard our students are working to finish levels and have seen the gains in reading they are making. This week 107 students were celebrated during Level Up Friday.
On October 16th and 19th, our Bayyari Bears will be distance learning at home. This is a practice for our Remote days for the days before Thanksgiving break. Your child's teachers will be preparing high-quality learning lessons for your child to complete these days.
Lessons will be sent home beginning the week of October 12, you may choose to have your child turn in work before October 16. All the work that the teachers are submitting can be done independently. Teachers are currently teaching little lessons to make sure your child is ready to do homework. All lessons are due on Wednesday, October 20, but can be delivered before October 15.
We have Wi-Fi on porch if you need internet access.
Please remember that our student cell phone policy is that students turn off their cell phones and put them away in their backpacks during school hours on school property. We understand that many of you have given your students a phone so that they can contact you when they arrive home each day and we understand the importance of this. With that being said, we are having some issues with students not turning off their phones (just turning them on silent), keeping them in their pockets or desks instead of placing them in their backpacks. Please talk with your child if they bring a cell phone to school and remind them that their phone is not to be used during school hours. Thank you for your help with this issue!
As always, we are here to help! Please contact us at (479)750-8760 or email us at bayyariinfo@sdale.org.

An Important Update from Dr. Cleveland, Springdale's Superintendent
Nurse's Update
Students who missed the flu vaccines due to being absent, blended or not having a completed flu form may attend a separate school clinic to receive their vaccine. If you have parents inquire about this, please ask them to call me and I will give them the date and other information they will need. They can also walk in to the Washington County Health Department and get a flu shot at no cost. The address is 3270 N Wimberly Dr, Fayetteville, AR 72703. Yesterday was the only day for flu vaccines at our school. Please let me know if you have any questions. Here is a flu website from the Arkansas Department of Health explaining the free flu shots at the health department.

Library Update
The library staff are excited to announce that we have partnered with Book Depot to host a two-week online book fair fundraiser through their retail website, Book Outlet, between Oct 20, 2020 and Nov 3, 2020. Book Outlet is an online retailer that offers thousands of new books for up to 90% off.
How the online book fair works:
· 20% of all purchases made during the online book fair will go back to the library in cash rewards.
· A unique book fair link will be circulated to you the day before the book fair begins to use throughout the fundraiser. Emphasize to your families to shop on Book Outlet using that link, so 20% cash rewards get attributed to Bayyari Elementary.
· After the book fair ends, over the following six months, 5% of new Book Outlet purchases will also go back to Bayyari Elementary in cash rewards.
This book fair’s success relies on how well we promote it, so let’s do our best to share it with everyone we know!

COVID 19 and student anxiety
COVID 19 has changed all of our lives in some sort of way. Students however have experienced many obstacles returning to school due to the virus. Starting back to school has caused some students to be anxious or even show signs of separation anxiety. Our students have been at home for months and have gotten out of the routine of being at school. Students have finally gotten to reunite with their friends, but at a distance. School rooms look different, lunch looks different, classroom schedules look different, and recess looks different. Most children have adapted well. I recently read an article at www.childrens.com titled “Back- to-school anxiety during COVID 19” that was very insightful as to what we can do as parents to help with anxiety and the overall transition to our new way of life (at least our current reality). Anxiety can present itself in many ways such as problems sleeping, irritability, fatigue, refusal to go to school, sadness, and physical symptoms such as stomach aches. Parents can support their students in many different ways (I listed some of my favorites). Reassure your child they are safe while they are away from you, support your child with academics whether or not its onsite learning or blended learning, encourage your child to do things they enjoy, and encourage your child to follow health precautions at school. We want all of our students learning and growing with us this year. If your child is struggling academically doing blended learning at home, we are more than happy to talk to you about options that may help. I know we want to keep our children safe, however we want to make sure that they are growing academically as well. We are here to support you and your family during this time.
