Political Side- Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was put in place on September 18th, 1850. The Act forced free states to return escaped slaves back to their owners. The argument slavery caused some righteous souls to become abolitionists and fight against immoralities of this heinous act while the rest of the people against it or for it ignored the inhumanity that the slaves faced.
Political Side- Compromise of 1850
Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state, created New Mexico and Utah territories (it was up to the territories to admit as slave or free), they revoked the Texas border claim to the source of the Rio Grande River, added Texas' $10,000,000 debt to the federal debt, and lastly gave U.S. federal marshals authority to enforce the fugitive Slave Act anywhere in the U.S. and ended the D.C. detour when selling/trading slaves.
Social- Transportation
This picture shows the development in short distance transportation. The Light Carriage was created in the 1850's and this add was set out in 1858 regarding the repair and manufacturing of them.
Social- Fashion
Fashion in the 1850's said a lot about a person's life. A well tailored outfit usually could reflect on a persons wealth. Since the sewing machine was invented it allowed people to make more elaborate clothing at a faster rate. The corset was used excessively during this time since it gave the women the look that they desired.
Economic- Gold Rush
In 1948 James Wilson Marshall found gold flakes at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. From then on the "Gold Rush" began, people from all over came to seek the instantaneous wealth from the search of gold in California. By the end of 1849 there was a population of about 100,000 non-natives and in 1852 the amount of gold peaked at $2 billion.
Economic- Panic of 1857
A fincancial panic in the United States caused by the declining international economy and over-expansion of the domestic economy. Because of the inter-connectedness of the world economy by the 1850s, the financial crisis that began in late 1857 was the first world-wide economic crisis.
