For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - April 2019
The Principal's Corner
Greetings,
As we are now in the heart of the Lenten season I am counting the considerable blessings we have at OLQHS. Our students seem to be thriving and working hard, and a number of our families seem to have pulled through a number of personal setbacks and illnesses, while others continue to face hardships. We continue to pray for those who are sick or facing challenges, for we know that God hears the prayers of our community.
School spirit is positive as a feeling of renewal and re-birth, the typical right of Lent and the spring season seems to be taking hold at the school. Re-enrollment is in full swing and we are pleased to say that we have already enrolled the same number of students that are currently enrolled for this year, which means we will be experiencing significant growth for the 19-20 school year.
As the warm southern winds usher in the spring season, we kicked off the warm weather with our annual OLQHS Golf Tournament. Eighty golfers who have a love of our school teed it up to support student scholarships, the trust, and our mission to serve our families. A great time was had by all at the Lake Charles Country Club. I would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff members and parents who helped to make it a success!
Finally, as we work through testing week and the other events that keep this time of year so busy we keep our eyes, mind and heart on the death and resurrection of Jesus our savior. Through him all things are done, and we keep him as our focus of the mission of Our Lady Queen of Heaven School. During this season of Lent I pray that you all have a blessed Easter.
Trevor Donnelly

Kindergarten is busy preparing Easter crafts to share with the residents of Villa Maria. We will talk with our friends at Villa Maria and pet some baby animals as we celebrate new life during this Lenten season.

The 4th grade students have been learning all about FOSSILS! They learned about 4 different types of fossils, and created their own "mold fossils" using salt dough. Each student brought an item to fossilize. After a week of drying, they finally painted them! They all look SO amazing!!

The Art World
Easter and the end of the school year are edging closer and closer, and yet we have so much to do. We have a few new members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame. In Kindergarten we have Jax Giaimis, Anna Kate Downs, and Grant Soileau. Our new Hall of Fame member in 2nd Grade is Jackson Downs and our new 3rd Grader is Lawton Bordelon. Congratulations to you all!
A BIG Congratulations to Cami Collins in Kindergarten. Her orange Cat received 690 votes making her the winner of the Artsonia Artist of the Week in the category Pre-K through 3rd Grade. Great Job!! Thank you for your Votes.
In Kindergarten we are still madly working on our "Cracked Easter Egg Families". You are going to love them--each member of your family (including your pets) are shaped like Easter Eggs. First Graders just finished making their Easter stained glass window with the cross. I believe the 1st Grade Hall will be decorated with these lovely works of art.
The Second Grade Hall will be decorated with their wonderful woven Easter Egg Place Mats. It was fun learning to weave. We have also drawn an Easter Bunny wishing everyone a Happy Easter. Third Graders have done a wonderful job drawing and coloring a "real" bunny with pencil colors. They are on display in the Fine Arts Building.
Fourth Graders are working very hard on their Picasso Portraits. After they draw them, they will color with cray pas (oil pastels). They will be bright, colorful, and WEIRD. It's Picasso--it is supposed to be weird! Fifth Graders did a wonderful job on their Big Gecko Lizards. They are now crawling on the walls in the Fine Arts Building Hallway. They are starting to paint their cat or tiger on a wildly grown long handle gourd (all twisted). They will be fabulous!!
Eighth Graders had a wonderful trip to the Imperial Calcasieu Museum to see their Illuminated Manuscripts on display. They also had the opportunity to tour the museum and draw the Sallier Oak. Here are some pictures of the event. We are also starting on Photography--an excellent and practical Art Form and the students are learning how to take a "Great Picture". Here are some good shots by our 8th Graders.
Remember, we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
