SWIRL: Our School Goal
SWIRL is The Washington Middle School Goal this year. We wanted you all to know what we are focusing on this year and what you can expect to hear from your learners. SWIRL stands for Speaking, Writing, Interacting, Reading, and Listening.
According to Mike Schmoker, one of the foremost leaders on the topic of literacy growth, there is one key factor for preparing students to be successful in the future: "Refocus on literacy in every single class. Students need to be able to read, write, speak and think critically in order to function as contributing members of society." At Washington we have taken this challenge as part of the fabric of our school. It is critically important that students use the skills of SWIRL to learn about how to think. Rather than what to think, Washington staff are focused on developing our student's abilities to learn how to think. We are currently finishing a round of school wide assessments in every class that measure every student's ability to read an explanation and use it. With the data we have collected, we will be targeting extra support for students based on their thinking skills in listening and reading.
Thank you for your support of everyone of Washington's learners. We appreciate our partnership with you in making a more successful future for our students.
