Shine Bright with Supt. Rebecca A. Jenkins
Dear District 70 Families:
I'm thrilled to share that the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has recognized District 70 as one of the best communities for music education for the second year in a row! This prestigious award showcases the work of our students, teachers, staff, and, of course, our parents and community members who value music in our children's lives.
It's a wonderful reminder of all the collaboration and support that works together to make Libertyville District 70 the place it is. Another opportunity to come together and support our children is the upcoming Families Learning Together event: Simply Bee Stop the Guilt on April 24th.
We are also looking towards the future this month as our students prepare for big transitions! Particularly incoming Kindergarten, 6th grade, and our 8th graders who are preparing to graduate from D70.
April 11 - Kindergarten orientations
April 29 - incoming 6th grade parent/guardian welcome and orientation
Whether it's the joy of discovering music, the anticipation of kindergarten, or the new experiences of middle school, we're here to support our students shine brightly every step of the way!
Shine Bright,
Rebecca

Celebrating the D70 Music Staff!
Libertyville School District 70's outstanding commitment to music education has been rewarded with its second consecutive year of being named the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation.
Now in its 25th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Only 32 school districts in Illinois received the award this year compared to 975 nationally.
"We are so honored to receive this award," said orchestra teacher Allison Zabelin. "Without the support of our district’s amazing leaders and the fantastic community, we would not be able to achieve the same level of success in teaching D70’s young musicians. It is a privilege to spread the joy of music, and we thank you for enabling us to do that!"
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, District 70 answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. NAMM, the non-profit National Association of Music Merchants, awards the honor.
Music teachers in District 70 include orchestra teacher Zabelin, orchestra teacher Carol Janossy, band teacher Carla Bollinger, Butterfield music teacher Jonathan Weppler, Adler Park music teacher Julie Perez, Copeland Manor music teacher Sara Griffin, Rockland music teacher Jennifer Vente, Highland Middle School music teacher Erika Brown Thomas, and band teacher Rob Swartzloff.
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but also to attend college as well. In addition, everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than those without music training.
New Director of Safety & Security
Libertyville School District 70 and Lake Bluff School District 65 are in the process of hiring a Director of Safety & Security who will be shared between the two school districts.
We have final interviews coming up on April 15th and will be bringing a recommendation for hire to the Board of Education at the April 22nd meeting.
The Board of Education meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on April 22 at the Education Resource Center (ERC) in Libertyville. The meeting is open to the public, or the D70 community can always watch the live stream.

Families Learning Together Series
Please join us for our next Families Learning Together event at 7 p.m. on April 24th at Rockland School when Jennifer McAdams from Simply Bee Counseling will present on "Stop the Guilt: Guide for Parents to Lead with Love & Boundaries."
In this presentation, McAdams joins D70 parents to discuss how to support children through emotional validation, compassion, and positive boundaries. Borrowing from Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), this presentation will empower parents to lean on proven strategies to let go of guilt and foster a caring environment where their child feels emotionally safe and supported.
