Rāmere Friday 20th May Haratua 2022 (T2: Week 3 of 10)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Bush School: This coming Wednesday we have Bush School with all the classrooms enjoying a learning time in 'the great outdoors' at the Kamahi Reserve, which is a great example of a mature native forest in our area.
Thank you to the Southland District Council for their work on the entrance-way. That is much appreciated.
Thanks to the parents who make this opportunity come alive for us. The weather is looking good for Wednesday but jackets are advised. A big thank you to Miss McVicar for her work with this.
Special Visit: Keep an eye on our Facebook Page, and the skies, for a special visit to the school mid next week. It is part of our Term Two inquiry into machines and how they help us.
Thank You - Team Edendale
- School Board: Our School Board is made up of five parent representatives (Jacob Smyth, Sarah Cupido, Logan McKenzie, Brendon Clarke and Catherine Frantz), one staff representative (Sanne den Boon) and Principal (who is a member based on their role). The School Board works at a governance, oversight, and strategic level, living mostly in the future, and charting a plan forward. They are the employers of staff and have a domain in monitoring and reviewing school systems. This is deep behind the scenes work that ensures the success of a school. A big thank you to each one of them for the time, thought and energy put into this role.
Matariki 2022
Schools are coming together to perform in what is a full and exciting programme of performances including kapa haka groups and school bands.
Food vendors are booked and will be positioned to create a 'food hall' experience for people to purchase a wide variety of refreshments.
At the conclusion of the event, there will be one of the biggest professional fireworks display that this area has seen.
Come along and be part of the celebration.

We need three parents to support this event as marshals please. If you could let the office know by Friday 27th of May that would be wonderful. The number is 03 206 6959.
Edendale School - Sports Events Polo Shirt
The School Sports Event Polo shirts are available from the school office for $40 each. This is required for Lower Mataura Valley combined activities for example Cross Country and Athletics Day.
There are two 2nd hand size 4s at the office for $10 each.
Safety Vests - Morning and Evening
As we are heading into winter it is important that all out students wear a safety vest to and from school as it is dark in the mornings and it's harder for drivers to see students crossing roads and at bus stops.
We do have vests at the school office for sale $10 each.
Our Team for this Week - Team Kahu
Kia ora! Term Two is well underway and our fantastic group of twenty Kahu students have quickly settled back into routine.
Last week we were joined by Renee McLellan, a first year teaching trainee from Otago University. It was great to have her as part of our learning team and we wish her all the best with her training.
We were also lucky enough to have Sue Galloway, a visiting science teacher, join us for a whole day of science. We learnt about chromatography (separating colours), made anemometers (wind meters), explored the density of water, and even had some time to play with the tried and true chemistry of baking soda and vinegar.
Our DRIVE inquiry for this term is based on being engineers and exploring how simple machines work. We have been lucky enough to have hands on discovery time by making different types of machines using Dacta Lego. We are learning a lot from this experience as we follow instructions to build and look deeper into how a simple machine such as a pulley or wheel and axle make our lives easier in so many ways.
Our reading and writing is all related to the DRIVE inquiry - we are writing information reports, such as how does a pulley work and help us, and reading about the technology and science behind some of the inventions that help make our everyday lives easier.
Our writing will also lead us into preparing our speeches, which we will be delivered before the end of term. This is all in amongst our other learning activities: practising for the cross-country, exploring art, taking part in Kapa Haka and having lessons with visiting experts.
We are all looking forward to being leaders for our whanau group activities (being held every second Friday afternoon) - these will be a good chance for our whanau groups to meet together to look at various aspects of our values/Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) programme.
We are also very excited to be able to head to Adventure Southland for our Year Six Big Day Out as this had to be postponed last term.
Have a great term everyone!
Ka kite,
Miss Sanne den Boon (teacher).
Character Values Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L): Term Two Responsibility Haepapa
Responsibility means we own our actions towards our roles, activities and items for our own and other’s benefit and is shown through loyalty, duty, commitment, initiative, onus, ownership, contributions, trustworthiness and doing.
At Edendale Primary School respect is demonstrated when we...
Are ready for our learning.
Work right through from start to finish.
Care for people, property and places.
Look after our belongings.
Involve ourselves in our school whanau community.
Every time our values are shown they make our school a great place to be for children and adults.
Term One - Respect Manaakintanga
Term Three - Excellence Tohungatanga
Term Four - Integrity Ponotanga
Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal/Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Ajay Anderson for being a strong contributor, living out our school values every day.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kiwi
Team Kiwi’s MVP for Haepapa - Responsibility is Dariush Singh.
Dariush starts each school day with a big smile on his face and a cheerful greeting for his teachers! Dariush gets himself ready for his learning by getting through all his ‘before school tasks’ without needing to be reminded
Dariush is able to work independently and he makes sure he works through his activities from the start to the finish. He tries to do his best work at all times.
Dariush is always willing to lend a hand throughout the school day and he shows a very caring nature towards his peers and adults. Dariush makes sure he does his afternoon job to a high standard.
It is great having you in Team Kiwi, Dariush! What a great role model you are. You rock!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
Team Kereru’s MVP for Haepapa - Responsibility is Isa Wighers Van Boheemen.
Isa is a delight to have in the classroom. She comes in every morning with a smile on her face, waiting to see her friends.
Isa goes from strength to strength with her learning, growing and improving all the time.
Isa is prepared for learning by having all of the correct gear and books at school. She has challenged herself in her reading to take on more sophisticated books from the library.
Isa has a determination with her school work and you can see that by how she presents her work and takes the time to do things right and complete the whole activity. She is even linking with her handwriting.
We are going to miss Isa in Team Kereru, but we know that wherever she goes, anywhere in this world of ours, she will do well and create new friendships.
Writer of the Week - Aisha Raluto (Team Kahu)
Last term we learnt about advertising. We created real estate listings to advertise our dream homes.
A Piece of Peace!
If you wish to have a peaceful getaway from the busy neighbourhood, we’ve got just that! Boe Estate offers you a secluded home on private property. The only way to access this land is with a special key that is given to you by the real estate broker, so this home is robbery-free.
Following through the dazzling golden gates, you’ll be met with an outstretched gravel path lined with pink rose bushes. Walk for a little bit and you’ll be met with a marvellous and vast 4-storey house. Four windows peer over the wall to see a huge pool supplied with charming floaties.
As soon as you open the plywood door, you’ll see the grand hall that will guide you through your home. If you look to your right, you’ll see a door with a golden plaque saying ‘Living’, as expected, that’s the living room. Cosy black couches face towards the massive TV. It also has vibrant paintings spread across the walls.
If you carry on walking you will see a second living space and two bathrooms. In the hallway you can choose between the elevator and the stairs to take you to the next level. I recommend the elevator but use the stairs in case of a fire.
On the second floor, you’ll start at the cafe. You get all of your food for free here, so get what you like! There’s also a balcony where you can eat your food or peer at the fine citrus trees behind the gates. There is a door at the end of the cafe room, which leads to another hall. This hall is just for the seven bedrooms we have. Walking further to the door that says, “Library”, the elegant and enchanting space is enveloped in huge bookshelves, also some comfy crimson couches if you wish to read there.
At the end of the hall, there is a massive door with the heading “Dining Hall”. This door is operated by a button, so you’ll be alright. A chandelier shines brightly on the great dining table, which is laid out with dazzling cutlery and cups. The chefs cook the food in the two kitchens which are just as grand as the dining hall.
Although it seems like a loud, busy house, it’s quite quiet, that’s because the workers aren’t allowed to speak and there’s soundproof barriers in each room.
Every room and story is more exquisite than the last. I can’t wait to tour prospective buyers around the property.
Our Kaitiaki School Board
The School Board met on Tuesday night.
Here's a summary of the main areas covered in the meeting.
- The Principal presented his Annual Plan Report and Compliance Report tabling along with that the Ministry of Education staffing and funding allocations to date for our school.
- The Deputy Principal, Mrs Jenny Coyle, tabled the Term One Positive Behaviour for Learning Report
- Teachers Miss Laura McVicar, Mrs Hayley Clarke and Mrs Abby Duffy presented class reports and toured the School Board through their classrooms answering questions from the School Board. This gave the School Board a real feel for what life is like in our junior classrooms.
- The school continues through the annual audit requirements for the 2021 financial year.
- Our four property projects continue along as we deal with the various regulatory paperwork requirements necessary to be completed before 'boots on the ground' can occur.
- Boiler: The tender has been let and we are hoping for the main bulk of the work to occur in October with maybe some preparatory work occurring in the July holidays. The project involves relining the boiler area, installing a new chimney, replacing the boiler with a pellet boiler and then modifying the internal storage area. In conjunction with this the whole school has had a heating assessment and we expect that new radiators will be included in many rooms.
- Swimming Pool Roof: Plans have been completed. An initial costing has been estimated that is above the money set aside. Work is occurring to seek additional funds for the project. We expect to hear more about this in July when new MOE budget rounds begin.
- Learning Support Coordinator Offices: The work in the administration block for the new offices of our Learning Support Coordinators has progressed. The tendor has been agreed and pricing firmed up. We expect work on this to begin in July, most likely the holidays. The principal's office will become the LSC space with the principal moving into a modified storage room.
- Classroom modifications: Plans have been completed and confirmed. The next stage is to move to tenders. The work involves putting in storage and display units in Room Three and Four and two more sliding glass doors, one between Room Three and Four and one between Room One and Two. This, once completed, gives the opportunity for flexible spacing options across the whole school.
School Board elections are coming up very soon and the School Board is looking for capable, strategic, governance focused parents who have a heart for the school and its community, to put their names forward. A number of current School Board members have indicated that they will be 'passing the baton on' to the next generation of parents.
School Board - Vision Day 2025+
The School Board is running its annual Vision Day on Wednesday 6th of July. This helps the School Board maintain continual momentum for the school. As part of that, the School Board surveys the school community (staff, students and families).
Below is a link that we would appreciate your thoughts on what you think our school's future could look like.
