Haskin Happenings
Haskin Elementary School- March 2024
A Message from Ms. Venetucci
Happy February! Let's cross our fingers that we are past snow/ice days and moving closer to spring weather! Thank you all for your flexibility, as the weather has significantly impacted everyone's schedules lately. I can speak for all of us here in the building when I say we want to get back to a consistent schedule. February is gearing up to be a busy month (aren't they all!), so please note the important dates listed below.
During the month of February, we will be focusing on Empathy as our Heart of Haskin core value. Empathy is being able to know how someone else is feeling, even when you aren't in the same situation. Sometimes, in more simple words, we call empathy being able to "put yourself in someone's shoes" and see things from their view. Why is empathy important? Empathy is the first step in having positive relationships because it helps us understand and relate to others.
We have received many questions about the calendar, specifically the end of the school year due to our snow/ice/cold days. As soon as any recommendations are approved by the Board of Education, the information will be passed along.
As always, if you ever have any questions don't hesitate to reach out.
Ms. Martha Venetucci

Social Work Corner
Welcome to February! This year seems to be just flying by!
We recently went through another round of SAEBRS assessments, which is our district wide social/emotional screener for our students. This allows us to identify any students that may be struggling or at risk with their social/emotional or behavioral skills. I take these results, along with teacher recommendations, parent concerns, and my observations to determine what students may benefit from an extra “boost” of social work support. This time allows me to work with your student to help them develop their already existing skills during the school day. I work with their teacher to make sure that they are not missing any major academic times and have them join me in my office for a group. I will be calling and sending out permission slips for these additional social work services if needed within the next few weeks for some students to join these groups.
Our core value for the month is Empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. We focus on compassion for others, acceptance, and patience. This goes so well with Valentine’s Day and celebrating the love around us and I can’t wait to celebrate for the whole month!
I am available to chat with you if you have any questions or concerns or need any help. Please feel free to reach out. I am available at 815-786-8812 x24007 or at rhaskins@sandwich430.org.
Have a great February!

Winter Weather
As a reminder, we will have outdoor recess before school and during lunch as long as the "real feel" is 15 degrees or above. While at recess, only students with winter boots, snow pants and gloves can play in the snow. Snow pants, winter boots and gloves help keep our students warm and dry when they return to their classrooms and engage in learning. You are welcome to leave a pair of boots here at school, if necessary. If you need winter clothing, don't hesitate to contact our main office at 815-786-8812.
Attendance
Handbook Committee
Sandwich Community School District #430 will soon begin the process of reviewing the
handbooks for each of the school buildings. This is an annual series of meetings to review the
policies and procedures in the handbooks to ensure that all users of the handbook have a clear
understanding of the contents. Please consider this great opportunity to become involved with the
district. The dates and the times of the meetings will be given out at a later date. All of the
meetings would be conducted at Sandwich High School and last approximately 60-90 minutes. If
you would like to serve on this committee, please contact your building principal.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Herzog

Heart Health:
February is American Heart Month! Here are some links to ways your family can increase their daily heart-healthy activities:
Motivating Kids to be Physically Active
From KidsHealth.org - Tips for motivating school-age kids to be physically active.
From U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services - An interactive way to meet the goal of 60 minutes of daily activity for kids ages 6-17.
National Institutes of Health - Heart-healthy lifestyle ideas.
Dental:
February is also National Children's Dental Health Month. Our district received some dental health kits and educational materials from Delta Dental. Please watch for these to be coming home with your students in the month of February and take some time to review the handouts and supplies together.
Please keep your student home if they have experienced vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever (>100) in the last 24 hours.
Celebrate the Haskin Staff!
We are blessed with an amazingly dedicated staff here at Haskin. Each day, our staff arrives with a student-centered mindset and goes to great lengths to help students learn academically, socially, and emotionally. If you are feeling extra appreciative of any of our staff members at any time this year, please give them a shoutout! It truly makes their day to receive such validations and appreciation form our stakeholders. Click the button below to access our Haskin Staff Spotlight Google Form.
