Showing off our Math Skills!
On April 16th and 17th videographers from the Ministry will be coming in to Madoc to film our math professional development activities!
Throughout the year, a variety of teachers have been coming into our classroom to teach, observe and monitor our math PD. Students work on open ended math questions, concentrating on the 'HOW' and 'WHY' of our math problem solving.
After a visit from the ministry last month, they have asked to come in and film on of our sessions to show teachers across Ontario the amazing work the students and teachers at Madoc have been doing!
Letters went home today explaining all of the details, and included a release form for you to sign. It is our hope to have all students involved as EVERYONE has been working very hard on their math this year, and it would be wonderful to show them off!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Headline of the Day: Fun with Eggs
After reading the Patricia Pollaco story 'Reshenka's Eggs' we learned all about creating traditional egg designs (pysanka).
Everyone had a great time creating some beautiful designs.

Today in Language
Our Literary March Madness continued today, with 'One' going up against 'Peace Week in Mrs. Fox's Class'.
After a breif discussion to remind ourselves of the stories, students worked on their response arguments and voted for their favourite book. I am really proud of the attention to detail everyone is putting into their arguements.
Though both books received votes, 'One' by Katharyn Otoshi moves on to the final 4!
Yesterdays winner was posted on twitter, and we were very excited to have the author of the book 'The Man with the Violin' tweet us back!

Math Egg Hunt Challenge!
Today we got to go outside into the warm weather and enjoy the last hour of sunshine! Students worked in partners to find as many plastic eggs as they could and answer the math challenge inside!
It was so nice to finally get outside, stretch our legs and let off some of our store up energy!

Parent Numeracy Conference
On Saturday April 18th the Peel School Board is hosting a Parent Workshop focusing on Numeracy (with additional workshops in literacy, science and school success).
This is a free event (including lunch) that should be a fun way for parents to see how students are learning in school, and learn about ways they can help at home.
I will be there hosting "Growing your brain through math games!" I hope to see some of you there!

Math Games
Area game: Roll two dice and create a shape on graph paper with that area (e.x.; roll a 4 and 6 = a box with an area of 24 units). Continue with a partner until you can not fill in any more squares. Challenge: use the double dice to make larger areas.
Speed Dice: Now that the students are comfortable with HOW to add, subtract and multiply, we are working to practice KNOWING the answers quickly. Students roll two dice and shout out the correct answer as fast as they can. We start with adding, then subtracting, and finally multiplication. Students are encouraged to use mental strategies to solve the problems. Challenge: Use double dice to increase the difficulty in adding and subtracting.
Multiplication Patterns (up to 7 x 7)
1's, 2's, and 5's seem to come easy.
We will be concentrating on 3's, 4's, 6's and 7's over the coming weeks
1 - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
2 - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14
3 - 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21
4 - 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28
5 - 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 25
6 - 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42
7 - 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49
