Girls Volleyball:
The Varsity Volleyball team moto this 2019 season was “DEFINE SUCCESS.” The Rams started off the season with a disappointing 1-8-1 record. Players struggled mostly on defense/serve receive, searching on ways to spark some offense and a few key player injuries didn’t help. The Summit Tournament showed some progress, the Rams qualified for playoff bracket for the first time in six years. And, then…Homecoming Weekend, Ritenour Invitational! The Rams placed first in 2016 and 2017, and lost in the finals in 2018. The players were determined to regain the title in 2019. Friday night the team recorded two strong pool play victories. Saturday morning, another strong pool play match. The playoff bracket was set, the Rams beat the host team, Ritenour in a long 3-set semi-final match and then carried the momentum into the championship match. The team upset the number one seed, Holt (25-21, 21-25, 25-20). The celebration was short because the girls were on a direct flight to the Homecoming Dance! Congrats to Kyndia Smith and Hannah Harder being selected on the Homecoming Court! During the second half of the season, the Rams pulled off some exciting wins against rivals; Burroughs, Clayton and MICDS, and then finally winning a few conference matches; Parkway North and Mehlville. The season ended in a hard battle loss during the first round of districts against Nerinx Hall (14-25, 25-23, 15-25). The coaching staff and players appreciate all the fan support. Thank you to the student body and parents. Much thanks to our managers, Nyla Edwards and Daniel Diringer. Best of luck to our Seniors: Kyndia Smith, Hannah Harder and Isabelle delCid. The following Seniors signed letters to play athletics in College
Jason Reilly
Having played baseball since he was four years old, continuing the sport in college was almost a no-brainer for senior Jason Reilly. Reilly committed to play baseball for Westminster, following in the footsteps of varsity baseball coach and math teacher Andrew Jett.
“What really drove me to [Westminster] was Coach Jett. He used to go there and he played baseball there,” Reilly said. “A couple other people that I know went there and they said such good things about it and it’s really good academically.”
While Jett was Reilly’s motivation to attend Westminster, Reilly’s first baseball inspirations came from his love of baseball cards and his grandfather.
“I started when I was a kid and the main thing that I liked was baseball cards,” Reilly said. “My old coach used to give me baseball cards and my grandpa used to play for Mizzou.”
After committing to Westminster, Reilly reflected on his time playing high school baseball.
“I like getting to know all the people I play with,” Reilly said. “I’ve only played varsity for five games. I played on C-team sophomore year so I got to know all the freshmen that were playing that year, and then on JV, I met more freshmen. It was just getting to know new people instead of just people in my grade.”
Tyler Gilmore
Senior Tyler Gilmore always knew that he wanted to play baseball in college, but he never thought he would find the school that was “totally the right fit” for him until he found DePauw University.
“Growing up and through youth [baseball], I always wanted to play in college,” Gilmore said. “It didn’t get real until summer after sophomore year when I started getting contacted by schools and started going to camps and showcases. I got lucky one day because I had a really good game in front of the school that I wanted to go to and they offered.”
Athletics were important to Gilmore in choosing a school, but they were not the only factor.
“I cared a lot about location and academics and athletics wasn’t the main priority, but I obviously wanted to play. I cared about location because I didn’t want to be too close to home because I wanted to experience something new.”
Throughout his high school baseball career, Gilmore has a lot of moments that he is proud of.
“[My proudest moment was] when we beat CBC (Christian Brothers College High School) for the first time. We hadn’t done it in years so it was really cool.”
Brady Sweet
Senior Brady Sweet has been running track since seventh grade, but running did not come to fruition until now.
“It started in early September. I was looking at some schools and Missouri Baptist contacted me saying that they wanted me to run track there,” Sweet said. “So I went there. I met with their coach and toured the campus and it felt like it was a good spot for me.”
Sweet was surprised to find out he would have a chance to run track in college.
“To be completely honest, I had no idea that track was in my future,” Sweet said. “At first, I thought I’d just go off to college and be a normal student, but I started doing really well in track and I may have a shot at this in college,” Sweet said..
After competing at state in his sophomore year, college athletics became more of a reality for Sweet.
“My biggest accomplishment is definitely going to state sophomore year,” Sweet said. “That was a pretty big accomplishment and also having the best 100 and 200 yard dash on my team and in our conference.”
Tommy Mohan
Senior Tommy Mohan thought he would have a chance at college athletics, but as his high school career progressed, Mohan started to look further into this idea.
“I started going to [camps] freshman year, but I didn’t really start reaching out to coaches to [till] sophomore year,” Mohan said. “Then it really started to pick up junior year because they started to contact me.”
After driving out to McKendree University, Mohan knew the school would be the right fit for him.
“I drove out to McKendree and watched the practice and that’s when I totally decided on McKendree and I wanted to go there,” Mohan said.
Mohan believes he was able to make due to his work ethic and his coach.
“I always working hard by hitting all the time, especially for baseball. Everyone is a bad hitter,” Mohan said. “You can fail most of the time and still be a great hitter. Just always working on that and my coaches [would] always help me get better. My hitting coach, Steve, is probably my greatest influencer and my biggest person that helped me out.”
Before signing to McKendree, Mohan was always worried about ruining his chances if he were to have an injury.
“McKendree was really into me playing football and he’d always ask how the season is going so he wasn’t afraid of me getting hurt,” Mohan said. “I’ve always been worried if I get hurt and lose what I have, but that’s always scary. I’ve always played football, [and] it’s my senior year so of course I’m going to play.”
The ability to continue playing baseball at an elite level is still a shock to Mohan.
“As a little kid, that’s who you look up to and now that you actually are what you looked up to is like unbelievable,” Mohan said.
Anika Zepeda
Senior Anika Zepeda knew she could not have made a better choice by signing with Hiram College, especially through the obstacles she faced getting there.
“I thought that after my senior year, it was just going to end, but I think the closer I got to meeting new coaches, that was like ‘wow, I’m at the level of play that college is,’” Zepeda said. “Because I always got shot down for being shorter, some people were like, ‘you can’t really play at this high level,’ replacing me even if they weren’t better.”
Initially, soccer was not Zepeda’s primary sport.
“I’ve been playing [soccer] for 15 years. Before that, I did ballet and dance for two years. I went through these classes and they were too boring. My mom suggested that I play soccer and I think as I got older, I was like ‘this is fun and this is cool.’”
Zepeda believes that she had a drive for the game that no else around her had.
“I think it’s because I had this drive that a lot of other people didn’t have when it came to playing, especially in goal. A lot of people that I used to play alongside with, either got burnt out or it became too competitive,” Zepeda said. “I think that I’ve always had this thing where if something knocks me down, it makes me work a lot harder or I don’t really get discouraged quickly so I think it’s the drive that I have from wanting to play. I’ve always wanted to play the hardest team or put myself out there.”
Education was an important factor for Zepeda when choosing a school, but Zepeda also wanted to be able to build a sense of camaraderie among the people around her, similarly to what she built in high school.
“I think the part that made my decision was the academics that they offered and also how the coach was. He believes that the order that it goes in is family, school and sports,” Zepada said. “ I think one of my favorite things is still being here and I’m really proud of the team that I’ve been playing with for four years and all the seniors that are still here.”
Allyson Sewester
Senior Allyson Sewester overcame many obstacles while she played soccer in high school, especially a knee injury that continuously kept her sidelined.
“Basically, I was injured for a while and I was running out of time to find a college to play soccer,” Sewester said. “So my friend from Wisconsin who I had played with years ago said we should go to this ID camp. I went to Truman’s ID camp, fell in love with the school and the coaches.
While attending the Truman ID camp, Sewester hoped to get recognized by the coaches at the school.
“Potential prospects that will play college athletics go for a camp so they can get exposure from the coaches and they can see if they want them to play for them,” Sewester said. “I went there and they offered me a scholarship [for] soccer. I accepted and that’s where I’m going.”
Although Sewester’s chance of playing in college was low due to her injury, she was still looking for a school that exempted her from soccer without taking away her scholarships.
“The scholarship [was a big] part [because] my parents aren’t paying for college, so it’s all on me. I needed [some assurance] to make sure I still get this money even if something happens to me,” Sewester said. “Before I accepted, I talked to the coach and he said I can keep my scholarship if I’m injured. I just have to become a manager for the soccer team during games.
Even with Sewester’s injury, she believes she was only able to come back because of her passion for the sport.
“My parents always tell me to do my best and that always pushed me to be the best. I had been injured for two years and I was like ‘I’m going to come back better than ever because I’m not going to disappoint anyone,’” Sewester said. “I don’t want to live in the fear of getting injured again so I’ll play as hard as I can.”
Sewester made sure she came back stronger by listening to advice from her coaches and peers.
“Literally, I would train everyday. Even if we had practice, I would wake up and go on a run or finish my day with a run. My club coach also pushed me harder. He sent me runs so that I had to make it in a certain amount of time,” Sewester said. “My skills have always been mediocre, but it was really my speed that I needed in soccer so basically during practice, I could tell I was getting better by when we were doing sprints.”
This work ethic paid off in her first game back from injury.
“When I came back after a year, I scored a [penalty] at my first high school home game. My coach actually freaked out because the girl fouled me in the box, I went down and she didn’t know what was wrong. I stayed there for a moment because it just caught me off guard.”
Though Sewester will always face the risk of getting injured again, she is only hoping to gain more experience on the field.
“I really want to be able to not just do the game for what I love, but being able to pay for college for doing that is really cool. Also, I don’t have to gain the freshman 20. But I also just love playing so that’s what I want to do.”
Holden Potter
Senior Holden Potter was unsure if he even had the talent to play college athletics. But after attending camps, it made the decision a lot easier.
“Over the summer, I did a camp at Truman and my cousins, who played soccer there, went there with me so the coach kind of knew me. He pointed me out and started talking to me so we had a cool connection. He offered me scholarship money to get me [more] interested in the college,” Potter said. “I did some research on the college and it had a really good program for teaching and education. I’ve always wanted to go there since my family went there, but after talking with the coach and seeing all the programs they had, I really wanted to go there and play soccer as well.”
In Potter’s decision, he considered the factor of playing at a Division I school over a Division II school.
“I wasn’t sure if I was good enough for DI or DII, but I saw that I wanted to play DII over DI anyway since I don’t want soccer to feel like a job,” Potter said. “But it’s going to be fun.”
Even though Potter aspired for college athletics, he was still unsure, especially after junior year whether this was something he wanted to do.
“It’s always been a goal but it slowed down my sophomore and junior [because] I didn’t know if it was something I really wanted to. I just knew that it’d be awesome,” Potter said. “But now, I really want to. I thought it’d be cool to play in college and to be better. I know in high school, you get a lot better just from the four years. But after seeing four years of college soccer, you can get way better.”
Potter sees this as a path to develop more knowledge of the game.
“I want to gain more [knowledge of soccer] overall. After college, I could know the game a lot more. Also, just being better at it and having a stronger connection with the coach there.”
Despite all of his accomplishments throughout his high school career, Potter believes the leadership he demonstrated on the field made his impact stay after he leaves the school.
“This year, I got the leadership award, which is really cool because I was one of the captains. I personally didn’t think I was going to get the leadership award, but a lot of the other guys look up to me and it’s really cool to earn that award more than any other award that was given.”

University City High School
UCHS junior Jalen Corn did something this season no other boys’ soccer player in the history of the high school has ever managed to do.
He not only demolished the record for the most goals by one player in a season – by 16 goals. He also scored 12 winning goals – another first for UCHS.
It was all part of a spectacular season in which the University City Boys Soccer Team culminated their season with a 14-game winning streak. That streak ended earlier this month against John Burroughs School when the boys went down 5-1 in the dstrict championship game.
Even in defeat, the team shined, Jalen said.
“We held Burroughs to no goals in the second half and scored,” he said of the team’s resilience.
Coming into the season, Jalen said he was confident it was going to be a strong season for the team. He’d been playing soccer since he was five, and he felt he was primed for a really good year.
“We played well last year, and we work hard. We really were bonded as a team.
Jalen, a captain, scored 46 goals this season. He finished the season as the top scoring soccer player both in goals and winning goals in the St. Louis region. Jaden also had tremendous help from sophomore Patrick Fuller who also set a school record with 26 assists.
Coach Thomas Henson said the team excelled with additional great play from the team’s defense.
Earlier this season the St. Louis Post-Dispatch identified Jalen as a player to watch out for, citing “His superb creative skills” that produce numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Henson said Jalen worked hard for the results.
“He’s one of the fastest players to dribble with the ball,” Henson said.
Fellow teammates for the season were: freshmen Jeramie Blount, Elias Klein, Eli Minor, Larryn Porter and Taveiyon Ward; sophomores Lucas Dean, Inigo Larizoitia, Daniel Looby, Christie Mapengo, Peter Murphy, Chance Pinkston, Aidan Shostak and Marion Wright; juniors Lawson Barnard, Ivan Coble, Timothy Gibson, Adam Holahan, Kenwyn Jones, Nate Martin and Cameron Smith; seniors Jacob Cherry, Marco Pluma and Gunnar Wurst; and team manager Zauria Billingsly.
The Girls Softball Team went undefeated in their conference and won their conference championship before falling in the first round of the District playoffs. It was their first post-season win since 2009 and their first Conference championship in 20 years. The team finished 8-0 in the conference, 11-2 for the regular season and 12-3 post-season. Team members were Victoria Cushshon, Jada Glass, Calese Hampton, Tarren Harris, Keani Jacobs, Traonna Martin, Annalise Overlin, Kelis Petty, Mary Ann Rhoades, Jaiden Smith, Staci Stevenson, Angel Wells, Bre Westbrook and Ayanna Williams. Congratulations to the team and Head Coach Craig Morris and Assistant Coach John Bass.
The coaches also had a secret weapon this year. University City resident Rachel Hanson, former head sotftball coach at Stanford University, served as a mentor to the team through her organization GameChanger Athletics. Hanson worked with the team on failure and resilience and will continue to work with the players to prepare them for college. Melanie Steen of STL TV's Inside Sports recently interviewed the coaches and players for a broadcast on the team. See the video above.
UCHS junior Merrick Hoel placed 17th in the Class 3 State Cross Country Meet at Gans Creek on Nov. 9, 2019. This is Merrick’s third consecutive year to qualify for State competition. She placed 3rd overall in District competition with a time of 19:36, her fastest time prior to state run.
The Varsity Football Team had their first playoff win in five years. They drove further into playoff territory and reached the District semi-finals where they were taken down by Trinity Catholic.
It was a fantastic season turnaround for a program that went 0-10 the season before Coach Jason Wells took over in 2017 with just 18 kids in the program (nine of them seniors). Wells said he’s been building relationships ever since to raise confidence and teamwork and to get players to take chances outside of their comfort zones both on and off the field.
Under Wells the team went 2-8 in 2017. In 2018 they went 1-9. But this year everything finally clicked. The Lions finished 6-5 overall, won the distinction of hosting a playoff game at the high school stadium, and gained back a real sense of pride.
“They worked hard and they worked harder and then they got to enjoy the fruits of their labor,” Wells said.
Wells has grown the football program to more than 40 students – enough to restart a solid J.V. team this year. More importantly, he said his players are acting like school leaders. Teammates like DeAngelo Davis and Dariaun Pointer stepped up as inspirational leaders who set examples on how to work, behave and play like champions both on and off the field. The team took it to heart, Wells said.
“You can see it in the hallways in the school,” Wells said. “ The whole culture is really just changing before our eyes.”

It’s a GREAT TIME to be a Husky!
With over 260 athletes participating, 42 All-Conference Selections, two Conference Champions, one District Champion, one State Qualifier and a Conference Coach of the Year – it was a special fall season to say the least.
Athletics have a way of setting the tone for the school year and our athletes rose to the occasion.
Girls Tennis, Boys Swimming, Girls Volleyball and Cross Country all turned heads as they led the way for our school and community.
The Girls Tennis team were Conference Champions and had one of the best seasons in school history as they went 14-2 on the year. The Girls played hard all season and defeated many teams that they had fallen to in the past. The hard work and determination of the team paid off as they came together as a whole program. This year the team placed second in District competition and also took second place is the North Side Classic. In sectional play Adriaina Martinez took fourth in singles and Veronica Booker/Tyra Smith walked away with a third place finish in doubles. Coach Beth Siebold was also selected as the Conference Coach of the Year. The squad graduates two Seniors but returns the rest of the team as they look to defend a conference title.

Girls Volleyball peaked at the right time and had one of the most successful seasons in school history. The program was led by an awesome Senior Class that left their mark in the record books. The Huskies took home first place in the Lutheran North Tournament, University City Tournament along with the District Tournament. This was the third District Championship in four years for the girls as they finished the season with a record of 25-10-1. The team also had many individual accomplishments with Makayla Hollyfield being selected as 1st Team All-Conference. Ava Biesterfeld and Sophia Reppert were Honorable Mention while Caroline Wong took home the Conference Sportsmanship Award. The team also had placed seven on the All-District Team and had seven girls that participated all four years. With nine school records broke for season and career marks, it is obvious Husky Nation takes Girls Volleyball seriously.

Cross Country is on the rise and with the commitment and passion of the team and our coaches things are only going to keep improving. For the first time in awhile the Husky’s season officially ended at the Missouri State Cross Country Championships. Senior Joe Kipper blazed the way becoming the first Ritenour athlete in 9 years to qualify for the championships. Kipper Joe Kipper had a self-best time of 16:45 and was a 6-time medalist this season with All-conference, All-district, All-sectional accolades and a new school record at the mew McNair Park Course, Parkway Central and Gans Creek State Course. Ben Weissler also had an amazing season with a self-best time of 16:45 and was a 5-time medalist setting school records at Ft. Zumwalt North and St. Vincent Park. On the Girls side of things Jazmine Brevik had a self-best time of 23:11, was a 3-time medalist and placed 34th at Districts. She also set a new school record at Ft. Zumwalt North and St. Vincent Park. All in all, it was a fitting end to the season, not just for Joe, but for a team that broke several school records, won many medals, and comprised the largest men’s and women’s team in several years. After 3 months of dedication and hard work many members of the team ran home with several well deserved honors.
2nd Team All Conference:
Joseph Kipper (State Qualifier)
The Boys Soccer program continued to field three teams for the 2019 season. All levels played a competitive schedule, that allowed student athletes chances to play against top teams throughout the area. More importantly, the coaches kept their focus on holding our students accountable in the classroom and in the community. The Varsity soccer team finished the season with a record of 4-18-1 and had four All-Conference selections led by Yemil Lopez who was the Offensive MVP of the team and a second team All-Conference pick. This was a great group of kids who worked hard and represented the Ritenour community with dignity and pride.
2nd Team All Conference:
Yemil Lopez

Girls Golf numbers were lower than usual, but the program hit the reset button with a new head coach that is in district and the future looks bright. Though the program lacked ideal numbers for team play the group worked hard throughout the fall to improve their skills and recruit future players. With the team returning everyone next fall they hope to build on the successes of this year.
The Huskies Softball is young, energetic and ready for next season. It was a great year for the girls as they continued to bond and improve throughout the fall. They went 9-15 on the year which is not an indication of the true success of these young ladies. The team won some big games placing nine on the All-Conference list with first team selections of Mallory Waller, Mia Key, Jayden Frost and Roxann Rivera. The game that best symbolized this group was a big come from behind victory against Valley Park. The girls were behind all game and then scored one in the 6th to tie, and had a huge 5 run 7th inning to complete a 10-5 victory. The Huskies will lose a lot of offense with two Senior starters graduating but are poised for a breakout year in 2020.

2nd Team All Conference:

Football did not have the record they were expecting this fall, but it did not represent the type of players that are in the program. This year’s team was extremely young as only a handful of Seniors played this season. At any given point multiple freshman and sophomores could be found on the field during Friday night play. The Huskies fought hard in every game this season, and what wasn’t achieved on Friday night definitely was on Monday when our lower level team took the field. The success of our C-Team with the number of wins and the ability to score 126 points this season is a sign of things to come. This was a great group of kids, on and off the field, as they stayed positive throughout the season no matter the situation. It is this type of positive attitude and approach that earned the Huskies five All-Conference selections and will help define the success of future seasons. Senior standout and Illinois OL commit Kevin Tyler along with all the seniors will be missed next year. They have helped pave the way for the underclassmen in leading by example. This team has what it takes, and the battles from this year will soon prove to be the lessons needed to become a playoff contender.
1st Team All Conference:
Kevin Tyler – OL
2nd Team All Conference:
Joey Mayberry OL
Ronnie Moore LB
Marcellus Griffin RB

Cheerleading and Dance are not divided into fall and winter teams as the same groups stay together throughout both seasons. With this said, they still need to be recognized for their amazing energy and school spirit they brought to every event this fall. These girls work hard year round and are athletes just like everyone else. They are vital to our programs and are a lot of times the first impression to opposing schools and communities. Their tireless efforts ensure the face and spirit of Husky Nation.
It was an incredible fall in terms of team and individual accomplishments.
Our coaching staff continues to lead by example and is constantly working towards the future.
We are so proud of our student athletes for their efforts and the community for its support.
To our seniors, thank you for everything and we will miss you next fall!
To our underclassmen… things are just getting started!
Ritenour is “On the Rise” and we invite you to join us throughout the rest of the school year.
Thanks for helping ring in the 2019-2020 school year!
GO HUSKIES!!!
McCluer High School
The McCluer Comets experienced some major changes changes before the start of the 2019-20 school year. District restructuring required many students who previously attended McCluer South-Berkeley to attend McCluer. This major change is one that would seem hard for many students who are used to the halls they have walked for several years, the coaches they had, and the fields they have played on, but our students embraced the change. The Comets had several reasons to celebrate during the fall season.
The softball team did a complete one-eighty turn from the 2018-19 season and kicked off with a four game winning streak. The Comets finished 2nd in the Conference and earned a top seed in their District for the first time in many years.
McCluer had another Tallent on the main stage at the MSHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships. Devon Tallent qualified for State in two events, the 200 Free and 500 Free. He ended up finishing 13th in the state in the 500yd Freestyle and 15th in the 200 yd Free. He also set a school record in both of those events.
The McCluer Comet Football program had the hardest journey through the restructuring process because of the large scale change that that program faced. Change is often hard for a football program. In this case Coach Howard Brown and his staff from McCluer South-Berkeley were given the task to bring these two teams together. Whether you previously wore red and blue or royal and black the season was all about four words, "Faith and Hard Work." Every athlete who was going to put on a McCluer Jersey bought into this belief immediately. The program went from 60 athletes to almost 90 and was able to field all three levels for the first time in over four seasons. A total mix of established Comets and former Bulldogs working in tandem across offense, defense and special teams achieved McCluer’s greatest accomplishments on the football field of the last 25 years.
The Comets finished the season with a record of 9-3
The Comets were the highest scoring team in the Suburban XII North Conference with 356 total points.
McCluer football was undefeated on the road and hosted more home playoff games this year than the previous 25 years combined.
Six Comets were voted 1st Team All Conference by the coaches in the Suburban XII North, three more earned 2nd Team awards and an additional seven players received honorable mention.
Through faith and hard work, the Comet players, coaches, administration, fans, and community re-energized a proud program. The 2019 varsity football season at McCluer High School portrayed the greatest qualities of human nature and the power of togetherness. While the Comet football team had some of the greatest success this past fall on the field, when you set aside the record and focus on the development of our students, school culture, and our community, every aspect of McCluer Athletics experienced a winning season this past fall. We are excited for the winter and what the rest of the this 2019-20 school year will bring to "Comet Nation."
Devon Tallent qualified for State in two events, the 200 Free and 500 Free
The Football Comets finished the season with a record of 9-3

We cannot say enough about how proud we are of both our girls and boys cross country teams. The boys finished in 4th place at the Class 3 State Championship in Columbia. Sophia Pelligreen finished 14th and Isabel Erdmann finished 24th on the girls side.
Boys Swim Finishes Strong!!!!
Several of our boys competed in the Class 1 State Championships. The team represented CHS well, as they finished 13th as a team, and also came home with many individual accomplishments.
