Growing Successful Learners - Whakatipu Mātauranga
Matt's Message
Kia Ora e te Whānau
For those of you that have not read the short email that came out earlier in the week it is with excitement and sadness that we will farewell both Fay Warnock our Deputy Principal and Tracey Price, room 18 and Tuhua to new positions at the end of the term.
Fay will be returning to her previous kura, St Mary's in Tauranga as the Deputy Principal and Director or Religious studies, a new position within the school. Tracey is returning to her previous career working as an executive assistant within the Western Bay of Plenty District Council.
We would like to wish them all the best for their future.
Teacher Only Day Reminder
A reminder that FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd will be a teacher only day for our school. This change in dates was originally notified in our Welcome to Term 3 Newsletter. We will be working with an external consultant Timoti Harris as we begin to look at the new New Zealand histories curriculum that we are required to implement into our schools from the beginning of 2023. While these days can be a challenge for whānau, it is important that we give our staff this time for new learning.
Board Elections
As outlined in a number of communications recently, you will have received you board election voting forms in the mail. I would like to encourage you to take the time to read the candidate profiles and vote accordingly for the community members you would like to guide and govern our school into the next 3 years.
New School Signage
Many of you will have seen the new school sign go up on Dickson Road. While a sign is just a sign, it is more about establishing our identity and pride back in our school. We want to be proud of who we are as a school and as a school and board we felt the the identity of the school from the moment you walked in the gate needed to share and show that pride.
Next steps in this area is the removal of the gate and fence of the car park to be relocated back closer to the buildings so the children do not have easy access to move freely amongst the cars in the car park. This will also to make it easier for visitors to come into the carpark without having to get out of their cars to open the gate first.
New Turf
Our new sports turf is due to be started from August 29th and will take approx.10days to install.
For those parents who use the court for sports practices, we will need to ask you to find an alternative location for these sports practices.
If anyone within the community would like or need the OLD turf - the current turf area will be ripped up and disposed of. Members of the community are welcome to this if you would like it? Please contact me directly.
Mōtītī Market Day
The excitement around the school is nearing fever pitch with Friday's Market Day fast approaching. For those of you who are not aware of what Mōtītī market is, it is a unit of learning where the Year 5-6 ākonga (students) develop a mini business and then have a big market day selling their products, services (games) and basically have an awesome day. The other students in the school are able to bring a small amount of money to come and enjoy in the process. So if you would like to send your children to school on Friday with some gold coins, they are more than welcome to do so. Parents you are also invited to come and join!
I look forward to seeing many of you around school on Friday as we enjoy the market day together.
Ngā mihi
Matt Simeon

Board of Trustees - August Whakahou (Update)
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Here is the monthly whakahou (update) in the school newsletter, so that you stay more informed of the progress we are making on the Board of Trustees. Thank-you to the parents/caregivers who have stood for our upcoming Election. Please have your say on who will govern the school, by voting before Wednesday 7 September.
These are some of the brief points from the July meeting:
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
STRATEGIC AIMS:
Te Wharepuni (Collective of Schools) Update: Co-Leader explained the three aims that Te Wharepuni a Pāpāmoa are working on. Meetings with other Pāpāmoa schools scheduled in August.
Identity Language & Culture: BOT discussed the Maori Language funding that the school has received in the OPS (Operational Funding) Grant. BOT supported using this funding towards a Senior Leadership position dedicated to Māori development in 2023.
STAFFING:
Shannan Ing Resignation: BOT received the resignation of Shannan Ing, who is currently on maternity leave. Board would like to thank Shannan for her years as the Staff Board Member and for her contribution to the school.
Staffing for 2023: Forecasting shows we need to decrease the number of permanent staff for 2023, due to the drop in roll numbers from rezoning. Initial planning by the Principal and Senior Leadership Team shows that impact can be reduced, but will require significant work.
PROPERTY, REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE:
Weather Tightness Blocks: BOT provided an in-depth report on the leaky buildings. Remediation will be undertaken over the next few years with the Ministry of Education.
Hall Projects: School is applying for extra MOE funding to fix the black mould in the hall bathrooms.
Board Projects: BOT congratulated Principal and school on completing staffroom renovations, new school sign and purchasing two school vans.
Grassy Knoll Playground: School working on NZCT and TECT applications for funding.
GENERAL BUSINESS:
Health & Safety: BOT asked about our lockdown drill, due to other schools around the country experiencing this. School will organise a lockdown drill in week three.
New Equity Index: BOT were advised that the Equity Index replaces the old Decile Rating. The school was on Decile 6 and the new Equity Index appears to reflect the same rating.
ERO Meeting: Initial meeting scheduled with Senior Management Team and Board Chairperson in August.
Board Election Planning: Four parents attended this board meeting to find out more about becoming a Board Member prior to the election in September.
Before & After School Care Proposal: BOT has received two proposals from after school care providers. Further information to be sought and then discussed.
As always, the Board welcomes your feedback on our school’s governance. Please contact the Board Chairperson on botchairperson@papamoa.school.nz with any queries.
Ngā mihi,
Sarah Webb.
