EcoChallenge Instructions
Welcome to Seattle University's EcoChallenge 2017!
Thanks for taking part in the EcoChallenge! Let's give you the run-down so you can get started.
The EcoChallenge runs April 10-28, 2017. It's a fun 3-week event encouraging participants to make small lifestyle changes to care for the planet and our communities. This year's theme is "Belongings and Belonging". You will be challenged to reflect on your consumption and its connection to our communities, locally and globally. Each week, you can earn points by making simple lifestyle changes, advocating for the issues that matter to you, and learning something new. Don't worry, we will provide you with lots of ideas for activities! These are all optional of course, but the more you do, the more points you earn, and the more chance you make to win one of our fabulous weekly prices.
For any questions you may have about the EcoChallenge, check out the EcoChallenge website or email us at cejsintern@gmail.com.
Keeping Track: Newsletters and Scorecards
- The 2017 EcoChallenge begins on Monday, April 10 and ends on Friday, April 28.
- Each week, you will receive a newsletter on Sunday (April 9, April 16, April 23).
- The newsletter contains brief information about the week’s theme, suggestions for completing the week's challenges, and a link to the week’s scorecard.
- Scorecards need to be completed at the end of each week, by 11:59 P.M. on Monday (April 17, April 24, May 1).
- You will find a link to your scorecard at the end of each newsletter.
- For teams: We encourage you to participate in challenges as a team, but it is not mandatory - everyone on the team fills out their own scorecard. We will take care of adding up your team's total points!
Cut to the Chase: The Prizes
$25 worth of gifts from local businesses and SU sponsors will be awarded each week to the highest scoring participant: there will be one winner in week 1, two winners in week 2, and three winners in week 3. At the completion of the EcoChallenge, the highest scoring team will receive one gift for each team member.
The Weekly Challenges
Week 1 (April 10-16): Consumption Baseline Week!
This year the EcoChallenge will start by asking participants to track their consumption. We will provide you with a tracking sheet that is easy to fill out. You will not be asked to turn this sheet in; it is just for your own record.
The tracking sheet is split up into two parts:
1) Budgeting: This is where you can track your weekly spending, entirely for your own benefit. Think about how your purchases affect the environment and the community.
2) Food & Water: This section lists questions regarding your food consumption and water use. Keep track of your answers over the week to make filling out your scorecard a little bit easier, as well as to track how your behavior is changing throughout the EcoChallenge.
Weeks 2 and 3 (April 17-23 and April 24-30): Food and Water
In weeks 2 and 3, you and your team can earn points by learning, acting/advocating, tracking, and sharing about "Food and Water" consumption and its impact on our communities. We will provide lots of ideas for activities!
- Learn: Whether you are just starting out on eco-friendly living or have been practicing it for a while, there is always something new to learn. We have selected short, informative videos, guides, articles, and web sites that will give you more insight into the topic of Food and Water.
- Act and Advocate: The point of this challenge is to take meaningful action toward living a more sustainable lifestyle. We're challenging you to make small, attainable lifestyle changes that can have a big impact.
- Track: Keep tracking that consumption! Note any changes since week 1?
- Share: We like sharing, don't you? Did you like the video for the week? Learned something new? Want to take a selfie at the Farmers Market? Share it with us, on social media, or in-person with friends and family.
You will receive a newsletter similar to this one each Sunday with more details. Still have questions? We are happy to answer them! Email us at cejsintern@gmail.com.
