Information, Updates, and Opportunities for Lenawee
LOCAL Literacy Leader Feature: Gina Gemalsky
A literacy leader is (in 3 words): a change agent!
How does our C2C Literacy Network inspire/enhance the work you are doing in Onsted?
It has been a pleasure to join forces with the C2C Literacy Network. There is amazing work happening in Lenawee County and I am proud to be part of this outstanding work. I am inspired by the many hands and minds that come together to make literacy a priority in our county. The children in our area are reaping the great benefits of this work. C2C has provided Onsted with outstanding literacy leaders and connections that we can bring back to our district. I am excited to see what more we can provide to our kiddos in Lenawee County!
What is your hope for every child, in every place, throughout the year in Lenawee?
My hope is that ALL students feel successful and know that many people are supporting their learning at school, home and in the community. I want students to know that they are amazing no matter how they learn, what they feel like or the tough experiences they face.
Onsted Elementary - #GetCaughtReadingOnsted
Project of Pride
In the month of March, I challenged our students to read as many minutes as they could. To take it one step further and promote literacy in our community, we extend the challenge to all family, friends, community members and staff members.
We rewarded the top 4 classes with money to go towards building their classroom library. The students were so engaged and dedicated! Collectively, everyone read 3,826,417 minutes!
We celebrated with an assembly to award the winners and encourage students to continue their efforts! In addition to logging minutes, we also put over 700 books in bins throughout the community.
Students love stopping in to local businesses to choose a new book and talk about what book they’re currently reading! It has definitely sparked more interest in reading throughout our school and in the community.
I look forward to the next adventure that we can involve the community and continue the love of reading in Onsted!

Michigan ASCD is proud to announce a new award program in support of ASCD Worldwide and The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Initiative in conjunction with the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principal Association(MEMSPA). This award seeks to identify schools in Michigan that have created a school culture with programs that exemplify one of the five tenets of this Initiative: Healthy, Safe, Supported, Challenged or Engaged.
Schools applying for one of the awards will be required to submit a completed application, along with supporting evidence to Michigan ASCD, according to program guidelines and timelines. There is a $20 application fee that goes toward the operational support of this program. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee to determine which school should receive the recognition, three complimentary registrations for the MEMSPA Annual Conference in December 2018, and a $2,500 grant, given for the purpose of implementing other goals related to one of the tenets of the Whole Child Initiative.
You may submit a maximum of three (3) letters of support for your school from anyone such as: superintendent, PTA/PTO President, parent(s), student(s) community agency, or anyone else in your community who supports your school. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM on October 1, 2018.

2018-19 Additional Time Grant Application
Additional Instructional Time Grant
Section 35a(5) of the FY 2018 State School Aid Act provides $19,900,000 to districts for additional instructional time to pupils in grades K-3 who have been identified as needing additional supports and interventions in order to be reading at grade level by the end of grade 3.
Summer Learning as Additional Time Activities
As we celebrate the AMBITIOUS summer literacy initiative, Summer Lit Lab Pop-Ups, please consider designating funds to support this effort again next summer. Although we are not able to report data as of yet, we are excited to see the impact this project had on our students. There were numerous "additional time" learning opportunities that were embedded with the Pop-Up, such as Tecumseh's small group literacy opportunities and Morenci's partnership with the local Rec & Ed and Stair Public Library.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The 18-19 Section 35a(5) Additional Instructional Time Grant application is now available. The application will remain open until Friday, October 19, 2018 with grant funds being awarded in the November State Aid payment.
PLEASE NOTE: There will only be one (1) round of grant funding. Allocated grant funds will be dependent upon number of applicants and based on a formula for an equal amount per pupil based on the number of eligible first graders determined by end of school year 2017-2018 count. The grant award amount may vary from your previous award.
