Safety & Security Newsletter
Ellensburg School District
We ALL need to work together to keep our schools safe!
Our goal is to provide specific resources and information to create a meaningful dialogue about school safety. We have taken great steps toward a safer and more secure district, however it is going to take all of us (yes, YOU!) working together as a team to keep our students safe.

Physical Security
We've added additional layers of security to keep our students and staff safe. For more information about the physical security features we have added, click here.
See Something, Say Something
We have an anonymous tipline where students can text a tip about any concerning behavior or issue. For more information or to report a tip, click here.
Run, Hide, Fight
We train our staff and students to Run, Hide and Fight. This protocol is a nationally-accepted leading practice, endorsed by the FBI, Homeland Security, FEMA, and Ready.gov. Check our the Ready.gov website for more resources about keeping yourself and your family safe in a variety of situations.
Emergency Drills
We practice a variety of drills every year in accordance with state law in all of our schools to ensure our staff and students are ready to respond. Some of these drills include
- Evacuation (initiated automatically when smoke or fire is detected in a building)
- Emergency Lockdown (initiated to isolate students and staff from certain immediate threats)
- Secure and Teach (initiated to isolate students and staff from possible exterior threats)
- Shelter In Place (initiated whenever isolation of the interior environment is likely to be effective against an external environmental hazard

What can I do?
Talking to your child about school safety can be a hard topic to discuss. It's important, however, to have a plan and be prepared to act. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Invite your child to share their plans and how they practice for emergencies at school.
- Talk to your child about staying safe online
- Review your contact information with your child, and contact information for adults that you trust. Make sure they know who to call in case of emergency.
- Talk about all of the ways to keep your child safe, including at home. The Safe Kids Worldwide website is a great resource for you and your family.
