"Carton to Garden" Project
The garden purpose - The garden was developed in order to provide ALL students with and without disabilities a place to learn through hands on experiences. Specifically, students with special needs utilize the garden through their functional curriculum and care for the garden by planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting crops to incorporate into their cooking and life skills program. The garden also serves as a sanctuary to help relieve stress, anxiety, and provide sensory integration into students daily routines. The garden gives students a purpose and responsibility to care for, maintain, and feel a sense of accomplishment with what they have created.
The "Carton to Garden" project purpose - To help continue to integrate inclusion among ALL students through the garden. The project included the use and construction of over 300 milk-cartons, over 100 students (with and without disabilities) and 8 departments on campus (Autism class, graphic design, biology, Avid, photography, film, Art, and Chinese language department). The overall project created and enhanced the sanctuary element for ALL students by transforming the milk-cartons into Chinese lanterns and functional planters. Milk carton planters were hung throughout the garden and planted with various flowers, crops, and spices, as well as lanterns were hung above and around the garden area.

Athletic Senior Spotlight
It’s important in life to recognize and cherish special moments or teams when we can still see them play together. This year’s Senior class in our Baseball program definitely falls into the category of special. It is Coach Lavalle’s second largest class where he’ll see 16 young men walk at graduation this May. This class is an anomaly, which will see 10 of its 16 Seniors moving on to play some level of collegiate Baseball in the Fall. Of those 10, there are four Division 1 signees: Trevor Ernt (San Jose St.), Justin Ganulin Goldstein (Oregon), Connor McGuire (UC Irvine) and Sean McLain (Arizona St.). Here are some of this talented group’s accomplishments:
2016 PCL Champs at Freshman Level
2017 PCL Champs at JV Level
2018 PCL Champs at Varsity Level, 26-4-1 overall record
2018 CIF Lost in the Championship Game of the Division 2 CIF Playoffs
2019 Currently 13-3 overall, 8-1 league record, 1st place in PCL
This Senior class has a unique passion for the game. Coach Lavalle boasted of his group,”Their greatest quality is that they’re self-motivated. Last Saturday I arrived at 8am to work on the field and six of them were already there.” Coach is also extremely proud of how this group has dealt with adversity as well as their consistent coachability throughout their time here. With four weeks remaining in the regular season, this group has its eyes set on another PCL title and a deep run in the Division 1 playoffs.

Environmental Science Symposium
On Friday March 8 , AP Environmental Science Students presented their research and proposals on challenges facing the Upper Newport Bay (Back Bay). This is the culmination of our study of the local watershed, beginning with a field trip to Upper Newport Bay in the fall. Students selected their topic of from a list of challenges facing the Bay, narrowed that to a specific focus and designed their own experimental/research approach to the problems with the assistance of a few local experts. In total there were 36 projects completed by 148 students working collaboratively in groups.
