Hispanic Heritage History
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latino and Hispanic communities. It will last from Friday, September 15, 2023 through Sunday, October 15, 2023. The event commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large. September 15 was chosen as the kickoff because it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five “Central American neighbors,” as Johnson called them—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. In his proclamation, Johnson also acknowledged Mexico, which declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. To read more please click the images or follow the links.

National Archives Hispanic Heritage Month Site
We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. Discover documents, exhibits, films, blog posts and more from the National Archives and Presidential Libraries that highlight Hispanic culture.
Asked to serve their country in time of war, Hispanic Americans displayed courage and valor in the face of adversity. Familiar with discrimination back home, many saw their service as affirming the ideals of democracy.
Hispanic Heritage Month Resources
On this webpage of resources curated by the National Museum of the American Latino, you’ll find a list of why and how we celebrate Latino communities and their contributions to American society, a list of virtual exhibits featuring Latino history, bilingual resources, stories of Latino achievements, and more.
Book Recommendations
Seeing representation in print and storytelling is important to students building identity and connecting to common life experiences. Below are just a few examples of the many books highlighting Latine characters, click each image to go to the article and read a bit about each book. Check to see if your local library has it. If you don't have a library card, I can help you with that.
Happy Latine American History Month!

Issue 11 Levy Facts
The District placed a combined 7.7 mill levy (4.7 mill) Permanent Improvement Levy and a (3.0 mill) Operating Levy on the November 7, 2023 ballot.
Based on current values, the 7.7 mill levy would cost a property owner $269.50 annually per $100,000 of appraised value. Due to property value changes resulting from the 2023 reappraisal process, the cost per $100,000 of appraised value will be less than this calculated amount. To determine the estimated levy cost for your property, please visit the Franklin County Auditor's Levy Estimator website.
The Columbus Board of Education passed a resolution during its September 19 business meeting that focuses on:
Advance Student Achievement
Modernize District Facilities
Enhance Whole Child Supports
“The federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds allowed us to propel this work at lightning pace. Now it’s time for us to reexamine and incorporate this into our everyday business functions,” said Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman. “This would maintain our momentum. We want to make many of these improvements permanent. This ask represents one-third of the Operating funding the District received from ESSER.”
The District has been fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars, staying off the ballot for the past seven years. During the September 19 Board meeting, the District’s Administration provided the Board with a statement of facts/information about the District’s needs and the implications for the School District of the levy passing or failing:

IF ISSUE 11 FAILS...

Panorama Survey
We want to hear from you!
We are asking parents and caregivers to complete a short survey to help Columbus City Schools make continuous improvements for students and families. The Ohio Whole-Child Framework recognizes that students can only engage in learning and social activities when their basic needs are met.
Information collected will be used to plan and engage families and communities to best align efforts to support students’ needs. Schools create systematic and multiple ways for families to engage
and contribute to their children’s education and school. Your participation
will help imagine, design, and build research-based tools to improve student outcomes.
Survey is open NOW until October 30th.
