Food for thought...
Sometimes my son's emotions take me by surprise. Things that haven't caused a huge reaction before are suddenly very hard to handle. Like when his Dad left for a business trip and saying goodbye was unexpectedly really, really rough. Or how for some reason falling down this time and in this place, even though he isn't hurt really bad, is just the last straw -- when five minutes earlier he would have stood up and brushed himself off. That wave of emotion comes out of him and it catches me off guard. Maybe it's because I expected something different from him or something more from him, that I expected him to be able to "handle it." When our kids are upset, it can sometimes trigger us to be upset too and instead of responding to our kids, we react. In these moments when my son's emotions are big and his reactions intense, I find myself being more dismissing of his emotions than I intend to be. I tell him; "you're okay" or "brush it off" or "calm down." It seems like when our kids are upset and need us the most are the exact moments we aren't prepared for -- the

Melissa Higdon:
Melissa is one of the many new faces to Ebinport this year. From the very beginning, it was apparent that Melissa was "here for kids." I appreciate her for showing up each and every day with a smiling face, ready to tackle the day's challenges. I love being able to have a quick exchange and update with her in the hall before she welcomes my kids "into the house." When I go to pick my kids up, they are ALWAYS still actively engaged in some way - playing instruments, singing songs, creating rhythms on their own, and so much more. Above all else, I appreciate Melissa's consistency and positive attitude throughout this semester of change. Since August, Melissa has truly exuded the attitude that ALL of our students are capable and worthy of a performance and time to shine. This was evident in our Veteran's Day program, Thanksgiving program, and Christmas in Carolina musical. Melissa, thank you for stepping up and being a breath of fresh air to our school. I appreciate your willingness to challenge ideas that you believe are not in the best interest of students while still being so positive. Our kids are lucky to have you.
Kristi McGuirt:
Mrs. McGuirt is the kind of teacher everyone would love to have! She is compassionate, knowledgeable, and professional. Mrs. McGuirt's students adore her because they sense the genuine love she has for each of them. Mrs. McGuirt is a leader in the education profession and also at Ebinport Elementary School. She has served as a mentor teacher for Winthrop interns, as well as new teachers. She has also served on the Leadership Committee and School Improvement Council for many years. Mrs. McGuirt is an expert teacher and makes it a priority to stay abreast of best practices and current trends in education. She is one of the most devoted and hard-working teachers I know and would be most deserving of this honor!
