News & Information @ Alta Vista
WELCOME VINCE CALLAHAN
On Monday, Team Alta Vista welcomed its newest member, Vince Callahan, to our staff. Kari Hansen, Alta Vista's Resource Specialist, is moving into a new position as a Teacher on Special Assignment for the District. Mr. Callahan will be stepping into her position. Mr. Callahan comes to us from Michigan, where he worked for eighteen years as both a classroom and Special Education teacher. Please join us in welcoming him to Alta Vista!
DONATION DROP OFF DAY
Union School District is hosting a Donation Drop Off Day for the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shops. On Saturday, March 2nd, there will be a donation drop at Oster Elementary School. We are looking for new or gently used donations of clothing, artwork, housewares, cookbooks, and collectibles. All donations will go to the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shops which support cancer awareness, cancer prevention, and cancer support.
The Donation Day Drop Off will be open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, so clean out those closets and bring your treasures to Oster Elementary School (1855 Lencar Way, SJ 95124) on Saturday.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES (MARCH 7-15)
Alta Vista's Spring Conferences take place between March 7th and 15th. During this time, you'll have a chance to discuss your child's progress with his/her teacher. In addition to talking about report cards and assessment data, it is also an opportunity to discuss other aspects of success at school. How does your child get along with peers? What are your child's strengths and weaknesses? Is he working up to his ability? Where could she use improvement? What can you do at home to support the learning happening in the classroom?
Please take a few minutes to do your homework before your Parent-Teacher Conference. Make a list of your questions and anything that you want to share about what is happening at home. We look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks.
Don't Forget - Students in first through fifth grade are dismissed at 1:15 every day during between March 7-15 for Parent-Teacher Conferences.
RELAY FOR LIFE - APRIL 26 & 27
Union School District is teaming up to support the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society. This year's Relay for Life event will take place on April 26th and 27th at Union Middle School.
Relay for Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Teams also set up a themed campsite at the event and often continue their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. All of the money counts towards their overall team fundraising goal and is given to the American Cancer Society to fund their research and support efforts.
Let's make sure that Alta Vista is big part of this year's Relay for Life. If you have an existing team, let us know so that we can support your fundraising efforts. If you would like to start a team or join a team, visit the Relay for Life website for more information.

LOVE YOUR LIBRARY!
"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child."- Dr. Seuss
An estimated 45 million kids and adults will participate in Read Across America Day, which is celebrated on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The goal is to bring together kids and books, encouraging them to be enthusiastic readers and lifelong learners, a goal we share here at Alta Vista. As we celebrate the joy of reading, let’s show a little extra love to our Alta Vista Library!
Here are three ways you can support our school library:
1) Help out with a behind the scenes library project happening now through mid-March. Find more details and sign up for a one hour shift HERE.
2) Donate supplies to the library so we can focus the budget on books. Find a list of needed supplies HERE.
3) Purchase a book from our Amazon wishlist and donate it to the library. We strive to maintain a current, useful, attractive, and interesting collection. We want to have the right books in our library, not just a lot of books. These books have been carefully selected to achieve that result.
Supplies and books can be dropped off in the library/media center. Thank you!
