Theme Suffering and Pain
World Literature
The most common theme seen is suffering and pain
Through all the piece we have read, most of the character endures some suffering. For example, when Enkidu dies Gilgamesh is distraught and in pain of over his friends death. Gilgamesh goes through this suffering alone and no one can comfort him
Pictures of Odysseus, Job, and Beowulf suffering
Job suffering
Job goes through a lot of suffering. An example of Job suffering is when he loses all his children. Job endures a lot of suffering in his story. For example, his wife tells him to "'curse God and die.'" (Job 194). Job goes through many sufferings before God is done testing him.
Odysseus homesick
Another example of a character suffering would be Odysseus, "His life draining away in homesickness" (ll. 151). Odysseus is suffering from homesickness because the nymph won't let him leave. Odysseus has been away fighting the Trojan war and just wants to go home to his lovely wife and son.
Beowulf dies
Another example of suffering can be seen in Beowulf. When Beowulf dies after defeating the dragon his people go through suffering and grief. They have lost a great man and kind king. They will probably never have a another ruler as great as Beowulf.
