Literacy
The week of November 2nd, we will review all we have learned in Unit 1 of Journeys. We will extend our learning and reread stories from this unit on communities. Students will take their Week 5 Spelling test on Wednesday November 4th. We will not get new words until November 9th because we are not beginning a new Journeys lesson this week. I will meet with readers in conferences and small groups to assess reading and set goals.
Then we will begin the last week of Unit 1, we will explore another kind of neighborhood – the classroom! We will consider the question, “What clues tell you where and when a story takes place?’ We’ll begin with Teacher’s Pets, a realistic fiction story about Miss Fry’s classroom. It’s a lively place for students and animals alike! Then, we will read See Westburg by Bus! an informational text about this interesting community.

Narratives
Over the next two weeks students will identify suspense when listening to a story and learn how to use suspense in their writing. They will learn the magic of three! (using three hints to lead the reader)
The Magic of Three:
1. The character notices something and reacts.
2. The character notices another hint and reacts bigger.
3. The character notices another hint and discovers it.
Then we will learn the recipe to writing a main event:
Cooking Up a Main Event
Blend these ingredients:
• Action
• Dialogue
• Description Main character’s thoughts and feelings
Ask yourself:
• What does the character hear, see, feel think?
• What does the character say?
• What does it look like?
• What is the character’s reaction?
• What is the solution?
We will practice the magic of three and the "recipe" to cooking up a main event in our writing!
