Sejong Cultural Society Writing Contest
Taking chances can greatly impact your life and can even set your course! One day on a whim, ELA teacher Haley Crockett received a flier from the Sejong Cultural Society in the mail, saying, "I randomly got a flier from them in the mail and decided to go for it! It's a really cool organization trying to keep Korean culture alive in America."
Ms. Crockett had a few students enter their work into this national contest and her students got amazing results!
Ms. Crockett said of the results, "This was a national contest. I am so over the moon happy for them!"

AP EXAMS, Here We Come!!!!
AP HISTORY students are Ready to RUMBLE! Wow. AP history students have run a marathon in the lead up to AP exams scheduled May 11-22. Not only have history students faced the unprecedented situation of attending cyber classes for the last nine weeks of the school year and the reformatted cyber AP exam setting, what I virtually promised students would not be the format for the exam, well turns out IS THE FORMAT FOR THE EXAM!
“There’s no way,” I told them, “that we will be doing a DBQ (Document Based Question) for our AP EXAM. There’s not enough time. The process is too challenging. Don’t worry, it won’t be a DBQ.” Not that we weren’t prepared to write a DBQ, as we have written many over the course of the academic year, I simply did not think it was a realistic possibility.
And then, College Board came down from the mountain and spoke to the people….
Drum roll please or maybe some lightning and thunder…
….and College Board said,
“The AP HISTORY exams will consist of one DBQ.”
Translation for NON AP HISTORY people -- students will have 45 minutes to develop their understanding of the prompt, determine the setting or context for what the prompt is asking them, examine a document set, select evidence – not quotations, but their explanation of the evidence in the documents to support their claims and then, analyze the sources in terms of point of view, the intended audience, the historical setting……. and write an essay demonstrating all.of.that.
To top it off, the scoring rubric that we used ALL YEAR has now been expanded from a 7 point rubric to a 10 point rubric. After I picked myself up off the floor, I told the students, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this!”
Over the last 4 weeks,
We have written 5 DBQs in the new format, with the new time constraints, with the new rubric.
I have scored and provided feedback to them, even when they didn’t want it!
We have reviewed, dissected, discussed and applied our newly developed understanding to writing the DBQ, to the best of our abilities.
They have worked hard! They have stepped up! They are ready for whatever curve balls College Board or anyone else throws their way! How adaptable and hard-working and for the most part, willing to go the distance, these students have been. I’m so proud of their efforts and you should be too! Go team!! Breathe...read…think…write. You’ve got this!
