CHS Community Newsletter
April 4, 2024
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
It was wonderful to meet so many of our incoming freshman students and families at Forecasting Night. The turnout was fantastic. We were also thrilled to meet with the Class of 2028 at BPMS and 91 assemblies last Monday. Current CHS students spoke to our Future Cougars about life at CHS. 8th grade students will have plenty of assistance completing the forecasting process during the next week. Please see the Incoming 9th grade section below for more information. Seniors and Senior Families, please check out your section below for important information as well.
Our FFA students recently competed at their state convention with fabulous results. Hailey Duncan and Paiton Welander took 1st place in their division and qualified to apply for nationals. Please see more information about FFA state in the athletics and activities section of this newsletter.
CHS students shine in the classroom as well. Our theater students recently performed for our preschool students. Students are busy learning skills in Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Business/Marketing, Agriculture, Manufacturing and Engineering, Construction, Media Arts, as well as Visual and Performing Arts, World Languages, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. As we settle into the third trimester, it is important that we commit to be “Ready to Learn:” on time, prepared, and cell phones away. We know that our students excel when they are engaged, in and out of the classroom.
Finally, it is Assistant Principals’ Week, and I would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Jeremy Ensrud, Ms. Megan Jackson, and Mr. Ben Winegar for their tireless work on behalf of our students and community.
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
College and Career Fair
The Career Center staff is hosting a College and Career Fair on 4/8/24 during the school day. Students will have the opportunity to talk with over 50 “vendors” from higher education institutes, trades, and workforce development. This experience is to help our student body think about their future options.
Student SEED Survey
Canby School District will offer Oregon’s Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey to students in grades 3-11, as required by Oregon law, during state testing this spring. The SEED Survey gives students the opportunity to voice their experiences in Oregon’s education system and is designed to capture their sense of belonging and experiences at school.
What is the SEED Survey?
It asks students about access to learning resources, learning opportunities, self-efficacy beliefs, and sense of belonging
Grades 6-11 includes questions about career-technical education and extracurricular activities
Grades 9-11 includes questions about post-graduation planning
Multiple choice, with additional open-ended questions for grades 6-11
Takes about 10-20 minutes to complete
Students may decline to answer individual questions
Oregon law (HB 2656) permits parents or guardians to decline to have their student participate in the SEED Survey. Any student who is excused from participating will have supervised study time or another learning activity while other students are completing the survey.
If you would like your student to participate in the SEED Survey, no further action is required.
If you do not want your student to participate in the SEED Survey, please click here to opt out. For Canby High School, please respond by Friday, April 5.
What’s Cooking?
At school, there’s always a meal ready to be served!
Some mornings, it’s tough to find the time to make sure your kids are eating a nutritious
breakfast. On those days, why not send them to the School Breakfast Program? Each meal
meets government nutritional guidelines and standards. Schools are required to provide a
breakfast meal that includes fruit, whole-grain rich items, and low fat or fat free milk. Check
your child’s menu to see the variety of nutritious choices available at School Breakfast, or stop
by to sample the food yourself!
Library Texts
Canby School District libraries use CSD guidelines for selecting new texts. This school year, new titles for circulation will be posted quarterly on the CSD Library Curation web page to provide our community with this information. Please click here to learn more.

FFA State
23 FFA students attended the State Convention in Redmond. Lots of students competed, attended workshops, or had a judging job while we were there! Our Ag issues team chose the Snake River Dam Removal and they had to do research and create a presentation to show both sides of the topic. This team consisted of Hunter Bourbonnaise, Gabi Unger, Kindra Slagle, Ty Matthews, and Dayana Morales. They did a stellar job in front of the judges.
Austin Mathews received his State Degree which is the highest honor given at state level. This shows time, commitment, and progress shown in his time within FFA. He was able to go up on stage to receive this recognition.
Four students competed in agriscience which is an individual or pair science experiment. These students chose an area of interest and came up with an idea to test. Caden Magenheimer studied chicken feed and how that affects growth rates. Hailey Magenheimer studied if microwaving seeds increased growth rates. Paiton Welander studied consumer knowledge of food product labels and how that influences choices when buying products. Hailey Duncan studied the longevity of milk and what qualities influence spoilage. Hailey Duncan and Paiton Welander took 1st place at state in their division and qualified to apply for NATIONALS to compete at Indiana this upcoming fall. They will submit their research and wait for a call to compete.
They also were able to attend a tour at the Tiexera Cattle Co. and have a team dinner during the weekend as well.
