Sixth Grade Newsletter
September 3, 2018
Dear Parents,
Welcome back! We are excited about the first week of school!
Don't forget that Tuesday is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 11:20.
English
We will learn grammar by studying mentor sentences. Students will take notes in their composition books and do an activity with the sentence each day. There will be a quiz on Fridays. This week we will look at a quiz so students will know what to expect.
We will learn many Greek and Latin root words this year to expand our vocabulary. The weekly root words will also be on the Friday quiz.
We will do lots of writing this year. Students will have plenty of time to draft and revise in class before they turn in finished pieces. We will use Google Classroom for writing this year.
We will have a Writing Club during enrichment time two or three days per week.
Math
Homework is posted in class and typically due on Mondays.
We will be offering an Advanced Math group during enrichment time two or three times a week. This will be especially beneficial for students who are considering taking Advanced Math in seventh grade.
Social Studies
Science
Will will begin each class with a daily journal warm up. So students will need to bring their Science Journal (a composition or 1 subject notebook) each day to class.
We will use a wide variety of techniques to learn the units and corresponding vocabulary this year. Students will be given a variety of options to demonstrate learned knowledge.
We will spend the first two weeks of the school year going over general Scientific Concepts: What is Science? Why is the Scientific Method Important? Why is Measurement needed in Science?
We will have Science Exploratory during enrichment time.
Something new for your 6th graders this year is they will be watching CNN10 Student News during the last 15 minutes of Science class. This is a student-friendly, fact-based account of world happenings. It ties into the Social Studies and Science Curriculum perfectly and allows students to make connections they may not have been exposed to otherwise. Each episode is reviewed by the team and if we have any doubts or concerns, we will not show that episode. We moved this into Science class because it ties into the curriculum studied as well as it then frees up more time at the end of the day to allow for more core enrichment, pullout support, and one on one time with teachers.
