LET'S CELEBRATE LAST WEEK
Our building looked amazing for Family Night. Thank you to Brett, Jaimie, and Lauren for organizing a wonderful family event!
Everyone continues to do a great job entering data into SWIS.
Thank you to everyone helping with bus duty, dismissal and recess on these cold days!
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP BUILDING
We have been talking a lot this year about the importance of building relationships with students. The following came to my inbox and I thought that I would share it.
Michele
How well do you know your students? I mean, really know your students - beyond their grades, or where they like to sit in class, or what it might say on their IEP?? Let’s find out. Go grab a piece of paper. Go ahead, I’ll wait...
In the next minute, list the names of your students in the order that you remember them.
Now, look at each name. For each one, write something next to their name that has nothing to do with school. Maybe they have pets, or they recently went on a vacation, or they have an after school job. Whatever it is, write it down.
Here’s the last request. Place a checkmark next to each student who you’ve had a conversation with over this “non-school” thing.
Are you surprised? Shocked? Upset? Pleased? Perhaps you see trends or patterns in your list that reaffirm the fact that you’ve built positive, strong relationships with your students, or maybe you see the opposite.
Here’s the good news...it’s January and you still have a lot of time left to build those strong personal relationships with your students. In many ways this time of year, after the bustle of the holidays, when many of us are returning to the classroom after a well-deserved break, is an ideal time to take stock of the climate we’ve created in our classrooms and purposefully design activities that foster relationships. Relationships, as many of us know and can attest to, are the backbone of learning and, as James Comer states, “no significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.” Students deserve to feel welcomed and loved and known and, when that happens, a climate of safety allows for academic risks and significant achievement. Building relationships is, and always will be, the heart of teaching and we, as educators, must never lose sight of that.
THANK YOU!
Brett, Lauren, and Jaimie

PANORAMA SURVEY
In order to learn more about student and family experiences in Framingham, we will again be partnering with Panorama Education again this year to conduct surveys on school climate and social emotional learning. As part of the district’s approach to social emotional learning at the elementary level, we will be administering surveys to students in grades 3-5 in January 2020. As in previous years, the district will also be administering surveys to staff, families and students in grades 3-12 later in the Spring 2020.
Survey Administration Details:
When: Please plan on administering the 15-20 minute long student survey at a convenient time between January 13, 2020 through February 7, 2020.
How: Students will take the survey online on Panorama Education’s secure website surveys.panoramaed.com/framingham. Each student will need access to an internet-connected device to take the survey. Students will use their 6 digit student LASID number as their access code. The surveys are available online in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Please visit the Framingham Panorama Site for additional resources to facilitate the survey administration, including the following:

Thank you to everyone who has already responded. If you haven't and would like to nominate a staff member, please email Michele.
The 28th annual Salute to Framingham dinner will be held on Thursday, March 19th, 2019 at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel. Additional information regarding ticket sales to follow.
REPORT CARDS
The report card window is officially open. The window will close at the end of the day on January 30th, 2020. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 31st, 2020. This link provides resources including blank report cards, a gradebook tutorial and instructions for printing reports for a select group.
As a reminder, if you have any student concerns with academics or behavior, report cards and progress reports should not be the first time parents are hearing about them.
Please be aware that if you have any SEI students in your classes they are scheduled into SEI courses into X2, with the exception of Personal and Social Growth. All elementary schools were instructed to set up courses this way. When you are putting grades in you will have to go in separately for your two sets of students.
Also, please remember that any student who requires translation in either Spanish or Portuguese MUST HAVE their report cards and comments sent home in their native language. Please use this LINK to access the elementary report card comments bank. There are translations in Spanish and Portuguese.
Additional questions have been asked about newcomers and how to complete grading for report cards. All students need to be taught the same district, standards based curriculum and all of our students are able to interact with and master grade-level standards.
There may be students that need different entry points into the grade level standards and ways of demonstrating mastery will vary depending on our students' educational backgrounds, experiences and language proficiency level.
On the report card, the classroom teachers should specify the student's progress to or mastery of the grade-level standards. Jaimie Dobson is available to sit with any staff to help with grading. Thank you!
