Drawing out the Cold War
A lengthy period of international tension
Yalta Conference
The leaders of the major countries involved in the Cold War were Winston Churchill, (Great Britain) Joseph Stalin, (Soviet Union) and Franklin D. Roosevelt, (United States) all sat down together one day at the Yalta Conference, which was a meeting between the world superpowers to discuss what was to become of Germany after the war ended. This was good at first, but unfortunately it created somewhat of a mutual understanding between the Democratic and Communist countries - one that could easily be torn apart by any slight disagreements between them, as we will soon see. Great Britain was left out of the Cold War, however.
The United Nations
The United Nations is a collection of world nations, (both superpowers and otherwise,) that worked together as one force to help keep the peace between all world nations. Included in the United Nations were the United States as well as the Soviet Union. This fact would lead to passive aggressive moves toward each other in times of differing opinions.

Relations after the War
Containment
Containment was the attempt of the U.S. to help spread Democracy, while stopping the spread of Communism (and all else that came with Russian influence.) This policy was meant to help protect the U.S. from potentially suffering at the hands of the Soviet Union if it ever expanded further - through other developing countries - and set it's sights on it.
Iron Curtain
The Iron Curtain was a dividing line between the Democratic West, and Communist East. It ran (/runs) along the boarders of several Eastern European countries, which the Soviet Union had every intention of grabbing and forcing Communism upon them.
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets decided to station 42 nuclear missiles in Cuba, aimed at the U.S. The U.S. feared for it's people, and didn't know what to do, but knew that something had to be done. Negotiation was the best foreseeable option, so the U.S. agreed to stay out of Cuban affairs, and the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles.
Brinkmanship
Brinkmanship was when two countries were on the edge of nuclear war, and remained that way to ensure that the opposing country did not take any further action against them.
In our case here today, the Soviet Union and the United States were the two countries that adopted this tactic.

NATO and the Warsaw Pact
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was an agreement of the majorly established democratic world powers to fight against Soviet aggression.
The Warsaw Pact was an agreement of the Eastern European Communist countries to resist against all attempts on democracy in their countries.
The two treaties were completely opposing, and therefor set in place just how deep of a conflict was between Communism and Democracy.
