WAVEROCK
The wonders of formation
Facts
The wave rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like an ocean wave. The wave is about 14 m high and around 110 m long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as Hyden Rock. This hill lies about 3 km east of the small town called Hyden. Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 395-acre nature reserve named Hyden Wildlife Park.
A wall lies above the Wave Rock and about halfway up Hyden Rock. It collects and funnels rainwater to a dam. The dam were constructed in December 1928 for the original settlers of East Karlgarin.

How was it created?
The wave rocks rounded shape has been caused by weathering and water erosion which has undercut the base and left a rounded overhang. This happened about 60,000,000 years ago. Water running down the rock during wetter months dissolve minerals adding to the colour of the wave. In 1960, some crystals from Hyden Rock were dated as being 2700 million years old.
