January 2024
A Message from Mrs. Galullo & Mrs. Austin
Dear Torringford Families,
Happy New Year! We hope this message finds you in great spirits and enjoying the start of 2024. It's wonderful to see the smiling faces of our students, teachers, and staff back at school after a well-deserved winter break.
As we embrace the new year together, we want to remind everyone to stay warm and cozy during the colder months. Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately with coats, hats, mittens or gloves, and boots as they come to school and engage in outdoor activities during recess. Safety and well-being are our top priorities, and your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We value open communication and are here to support you in any way we can.
Wishing you and your family a year filled with joy, success, and good health. Thank you for being an integral part of the Torringford School community.
In partnership,
Mrs. Galullo & Mrs. Austin

Look What's Happening in Kindergarten
Spirit week was a lot of fun! Kindergarteners enjoyed celebrating each day. They started the week wearing their winter gear. The stuffed animals helped them with reading and Lexia on Stuffed Animal Day. Their crazy hair couldn't have gotten much crazier. Our ugly sweaters were actually creative and cute. The week ended with everyone being comfy in their pajamas!
Kindergarteners learned about hygiene and germs from Community Health and Wellness' Donna Urbinati. They learned about the importance of washing their hands and covering their coughs and sneezes. The best part was making their own germ puppets!
Math, play, and being Stars of Honor at the UConn game have kept our kindergarteners very busy! We love to learn in a variety of ways; especially through play!

Look What's Happening in First Grade
Pictures show First Grade Teachers and their “First Grade is SNOW Much Fun” theme. First graders learned and completed many STEM projects about snow and ice!
Students had fun showing off their Crazy Hair, Snow attire and Ugly Sweaters during our School Spirit week.
First grade has also been exploring a new addition and subtraction strategy; The Number Line! Students helped build a life size number line in the classroom counting by 1’s and by 10’s.
We have been learning about how to be good citizens and what it means to keep our community safe and clean. Miss Mattiello’s class worked together to turn an “empty lot” into something that would make the community better. They came up with great ideas like a football field, a school, a park and ice cream store!
Students working on snowflake symmetry with shapes. We learned about Snowflake Bentley and how all snowflakes are different.
Mrs. Campbell won the ugly sweater contest at Torringford. The snow globe had a tube to blow into that would make the snow move around from the air. It also lit up!
We enjoyed the Reindeer Games. Mrs. Campbell participated in the snowball fight and we cheered! The gingerbread people were fun to watch. It was a lot of fun!
Look What's Happening in Second Grade
We love visitors! Thank you Mr. Williams for visiting Mrs. Deloy’s 2nd Graders. We enjoyed your read aloud Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. We loved sitting by the “fireplace” and listening to a seasonal story! Thank you for the special treat as well!
The week before Winter Break was filled with learning and fun! We enjoyed team building activities such as Snowmen Hunting! Thank you Kyla for visiting and leading the way! Congratulations to Mrs. Hollenbeck's Class!
Reindeer Games were “snow much fun”! Each grade level sang a different song. Grade 2 sang Hip Hop Reindeer and danced to it as well!
Mrs. Giampaolo and sons, Nico & Gino spectating at the Reindeer Games!
Mrs. Poklemba’s students were pumped up for School Spirit Week!
Mrs. Giampaolo’s class had some winter fun crafting, painting and experimenting!
Look What's Happening in Third Grade
This month, the Third Grade Students took a field trip to the Warner Theater to see the ballet performance of The Nutcracker. The students were excited to see the transformation of the stage during the scenes of the ballet. Many of the students enjoyed the performance so much, they returned with their families to see the entire performance.
The Third Graders also had a visit from Mayor Elinor Carbone. Mayor Carbone was very interested in the Third Grader’s recent unit on Government and how that related to Torrington. She spoke about what being the mayor means, her responsibilities, and what a day in the life of being the mayor looks like. The students had many questions for Mayor Carbone and she gave great explanations for each question that was asked. Thank you so much for the visit!
News from our Multilingual Learners
Our Multilingual Learners have been working hard practicing their social communication skills. They also work hard on their English grammar skills to make them stronger readers and writers of the English language. They have a lot of fun and get involved with all the hands-on activities they get to take part in. We encourage our families and students to continue reading in their native language which helps them in the mastery of the English language.

Torringford Student Council
Torringford Tigers C.A.R.E. with Acts of Kindness
Torringford’s Student Council is fundraising for St. Jude’s Children's Hospital. Each year our Student Council and Dance Team presents a donation at the annual St. Jude’s Telethon at Torrington High School.
To do this we will be challenging the students of Torringford to perform as many acts of kindness as they can!
Each classroom will have a large heart outside their room and will color in a square every time they bring in a dollar. Students receive a heart sticker to wear for the day for every donation received.
How it works:
A student asks someone to sponsor them to perform an act of kindness (any dollar amount)
The student brings the donation into their teacher and they will color in a square for each dollar to add to their classroom heart.
Students perform an act of kindness promised for the donation (i.e. help a grandparent shovel the driveway; pick up trash on the floor of the classroom; play with a peer who doesn’t have anyone to play with at recess)
When:
Students raise money from Tuesday, January 3rd until Wednesday, March 1st.
All money must be sent into school by March 1, 2024.
Example script for your child to say to possible sponsors: I’m promising to perform acts of kindness to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Would you help me by sponsoring me?
