Field Trip
First Grade Green Community will be taking a field trip to Lake Katherine Nature Center in Palos Heights on May 3. Please use the link below to register your child for the trip.
Sometimes you just need to take a few minutes to enjoy a beautiful day!
A Peek at Our Week
Writing: This week, our young writers became poets! We began a short writing unit on poetry. Students learned that not all poems rhyme, but some do. We explored some famous poets such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. Students learned how to take an ordinary object and look at it in a new way to write a poem. We will continue to learn about lots of different kinds of poems next week.
Math: This week, we continued our work with geometry in Module 5. The students are really enjoying the break we are taking from those tricky addition and subtraction strategies! Shapes are so fun! We spent time this week using pattern blocks to create composite shapes. How can you use trapezoids to make a hexagon? How can you use a rhombus, a triangle, and a trapezoid to make that same hexagon? They love using the pattern block stencils to recreate their composite shapes! We will also use composite shapes to explore the concept of equal parts, which will lead the students into understanding fractions later on! Next week, we will finish up geometry and begin working with telling time to the hour and half hour.
Word Study: This week, we worked with <ar>. We reviewed our secret story for <ar> which tells about Superhero A who gives R a turn to say his name! We worked with words such as smart, sharp, card, chart, etc. Next week, we will focus on <or>.
Check out these Reader Response notebooks! Look out, 2nd Grade teachers!
