DEVELOPING LEADERS @ SCHOOL
At Toko School we are working really hard to develop leaders within and across our school. Personal qualities include:
· Displaying what it means to be a Toko School Learning Star.
· Showing respect, responsibility and making the right choices.
· Working hard to be the best they can be.
Over the next few newsletters we will feature our leadership groups and they will share with you what’s involved with their responsibilities.

- road rules
- and a practical cycling course to build confidence.
If you do not have a bike or your child's bike is not road worthy we do have a few bikes that road Safe Taranaki can provide. Can you please contact the school if your child requires a bike for this day. Bikes can be dropped off on the back field via Ahuroa Road please.
Room 5's bikes can stay at school until Tuesday and Rooms 3 and 4 can have their bikes at school all week.
LEARNER AGENCY IN 2020
At Toko School, teachers introduce learner agency in one area to start with, before extending the programme to include more time and covering more learning areas. At each medal stage there are skills the students are expected to demonstrate to be able to move to the next medal. It takes time for the students to move through the medals and students move at their own pace.
Bronze Chart
At this stage learners will become more:
-organised
-independent
-focused
-responsible
At bronze level students choose the order of the learning tasks they will undertake. We also teach the students about the Learning Pit & Growth Mindset and this is very much a focus for us at the start of the year.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK
CLUSTER SWIMMING SPORTS
On Friday 13th March we have the rural schools cluster swimming sports for children in years 4-8. These will be at the Stratford pools and we will be leaving school at approximately 9.45am with the event kicking off at 10.30am. Years 4 & 5 will swim in participation races only and Years 6, 7 & 8 will swim in either the competitive or participant category. The event will take most of the day and is expected to be completed by 1.30 in the afternoon. Children will return back to school on buses afterwards. Students will need to be wearing their Toko school uniform as well as warm clothes to get changed into. They will also need to take water and a substantial lunch to take to the event. We are looking forward to a great event. If you are intending on taking your child home from swimming sports can you please let the school know. The buses are very costly.
WEETBIX TRYATHLON
If your children are participating in this can you please let the office know. The school does not set up a gazebo but we do all meet under the big tree to the right of the toilet block. Please look out for our Toko students and parents, as it is really good to all be together on the day. If you are new to this let the office know and Tracy O'Sullivan will touch base with you before the day.
Run, Jump, Throw
As preparation for the Rural School Athletics Olly from Athletics Taranaki will be coming to run the Run, Jump, Throw programme in week 7, 8 and 9. Run Jump Throw is Athletics New Zealand’s foundation programme for teaching athletics specific skills to kids. It’s based on the philosophy that the development of skills, in a fun participant centred environment, is the key to participation. The emphasis is on the development of fundamental movement patterns specific to athletics. We have asked Olly to focus on the field events of throwing, long jump and high jump so that all of the children are familiar with the guidelines that we have been advised in relation to running these events
School Tryathlon
On Thursday we had our annual school triathlon, we were very lucky to have such great weather to hold our event. A big thanks to the parents that helped transport bikes to and from school for the kids. Also thanks to the senior students for helping the junior school participate as well as completing their own race and to the PTA for supplying the refreshing ice blocks at the finish line.

We are asking the children and families to collect Yummy stickers which will then be converted into a share of the prize pool from DG sports. All classes will have a class copy of the sticker sheets for your child to add to but if you prefer have a copy of your own sheet at home these are available by the office or see a member of the sports council.
