Reading Engagement
"Engagement refers to a reader's motivation and desire to read and her ability to read for sustained amounts of time." (Serravallo, 2014).
Engagement is being fully immersed physically, mentally and emotionally in an activity. High progress literacy classrooms allot 75% of the time for engaged reading, writing. or researching. For math challenged people such as myself, for each 1 hour block, 45 minutes will be students actually reading, writing or researching for authentic purposes. All the books and time in the world won't make a difference if the student is not engaged in reading.
“…engaged reading can overcome traditional barriers to reading achievement, including gender, parental education, and income.” (Guthrie, 2004)
