Hello Glennwood Families,
It is hard to believe that we are winding down the year and what a year it has been! It has been my pleasure and honor to be the principal here for the last two years, and I have loved being able to do more in-person activities and getting to know all of you better. Please be sure to check out our end of the year calendar so that you know what events are upcoming!
Some of you may know that an area I am passionate about is early literacy. I am so proud of the work and training that our teachers and district are doing in this area. One event I am thrilled to announce is a parent session entitled What Parents Need to Know About Reading next week with Ellen Hill, the Community Engagement Coordinator from The Schenck School in Buckhead. The Schenck School is a specialized school for dyslexic students. Ellen is a Fellow of the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and she is an engaging and knowledgeable speaker. I have worked with her quite a bit over the years, and I encourage you to attend the session as you will learn so much about how kids learn to read. More details are shared below. Please join us!
Warmest regards,
Dr. Holly Brookins
Principal
A livestream option will be available, and details will be shared early next week.
Final Walk and Roll to School on May 13
It’s our last Walk & Roll of the school year!! Let's finish out this wonderful year of Walk & Roll SOAR-ing! Please join us on your feet, your bike, or your scooter (don’t forget those helmets!), and then stay for our marble count at Community Circle!! Students who walk, bike or scoot will continue to enter at their grade-specific doors, where they will be counted, using our traditional marbles, by their staff door monitors. Students can earn incentives, from our friends at Georgia Safe Routes to School and Georgia Commute Options, for participating! After dropping their kiddos, parents can make their way to the blacktop to await the start of Community Circle. Each marble will still count towards students earning extra school-wide recess! For additional details and a full Walk & Roll schedule for the year, please visit the Glennwood website: https://www.csdecatur.net/Domain/530
*Walking School Buses are on hold (due to Covid) until further notice*
Contact Amanda McMillan (almcmil@gmail.com) with any questions!
Field Day on May 20!
Prepare for fun in the sun on Field Day, May 20th! It’s supposed to get up into the 90s so make sure to send your child with sunscreen already applied, a hat, a water bottle, and a change of clothes. They may wear a swimsuit UNDER their clothes if they wish as there will be several water activities. Also, students should wear tennis shoes for running activities and protection. Field Day T-Shirts are provided for each student courtesy of Timothy Cox & Co Realtors. Students will receive these in crew meeting the morning of field day. Questions? Email Coach Meg at minscoe@csdecatur.net.
2nd Graders To Visit Talley Street
Next week, 2nd graders attending Talley Street for the 2022-2023 school year will have an opportunity to visit the school. The students will meet the school administrators, teachers and counselors. Talley Street’s student ambassadors will give the 2nd graders a tour of the school. The students will also get the opportunity to observe a 3rd-grade classroom. Talley Street is so excited to meet its new Tigers!

Second Grade Moving Forth Ceremony and Picnic
Second grade families, please save the date for the Glennwood Moving Forth Ceremony on Tuesday 5/24, at 8:30-9:15 AM.
For the picnic, we are asking for FIRST GRADE parent volunteers to help set up the Glenlake Park pavilion, so second-grade parents don't miss the ceremony. We're also asking for volunteers to walk with students to the pavilion to arrive at 10 AM. We will have pizza at 11 AM, and King of Pops will distribute pops from 11:30-12:30! Kids will depart the park at 1 PM to head back to school for dismissal. Please sign up HERE to help with the picnic.
Glennwood Community Art Experience
Building bridges: Celebrating our Common Connections and Pride in our Individuality
Parents/Caregivers: Come join your child and the Glennwood community in a collective art experience (non-messy, simple, and quick:)
When: Last day of School, right after Community Circle! (Friday, May 27th)
What: The children have been creating Charms of Individuality in art class (with their teacher, Ms. Nadine Howarth) to celebrate what makes them proud about themselves and/or their families.
Help the children form a bridge of connection out of their Individual Charms.
Where: We'll form a bridge with the children's charms along the tall, green fence behind the school building, next to the tent.
Hosted by: Glennwood PTA/Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

Extra Mile Award
Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone “the extra mile” this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show their appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.
Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.
Click here to submit a nomination. Students can also find the form any time via LaunchPad (it’s the purple icon labeled “Extra Mile Award nomination”). The deadline is May 25.
These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.

THANK YOU DECATUR COMMUNITY! Our snack and weekend backpack lists have been filled for the rest of the year, thanks to your generosity!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our DEF Treasure Hunt, we hope you had fun! The WINNERS of the Treasure Hunt have been chosen: Congratulations to hunting groups “Catsquad” and “The Two and Only People who say buy” who represent Winnona Park and F.AVE respectively. The winners will be contacted via email about collecting their prizes.
There are still Step Up and Class of 2022 yard signs still available! And it’s not too late to express your appreciation for a teacher or CSD staff member with a Step Up tribute: Go to www.stepupforteachers.com, make a $25 contribution and you can leave a tribute message for your favorite CSD employee. DEF will notify the honored person. For $50 you can honor two CSD staff members AND have a yard sign delivered to your Decatur address. You can also celebrate your DHS seniors with Class of 2022 yard sign. Your contributions support Teacher Innovation Grants and provide an encouraging boost that our teachers need to finish the school year! (If a contribution is a barrier, please email your tribute and request to drew@decatureducationfoundation.org.)
