History
In 2006, a chapel was built at the base of the statue to commemorate the statue's 75th anniversary. It holds weddings, baptisms, and Sunday mass. The statue was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. It was renovated in 2010 and another renovation is scheduled for 2020.

Interesting Facts
- The Christ the Redeemer statue was struck by lighting, but received minimal damage due to the insulating properties of soapstone, its main component.
- It was vandalized in 2010.
- The soapstone used to build the statue is from a quarry in Sweden.
- All costs for the statue were covered by money donated by locals.
- The statue is featured in many movies and video games.
- Christ the Redeemer is known as "Cristo Redentor" in Brazil.
