Welcome to April
Happy National Poetry Month!
Let's wax poetic about April!
You've probably heard the news...
Thank you, Brooke!
Last month at the Upper Skagit Library we...
...celebrated Women's History Month alongside the National Women's History Alliance.
This year's theme was Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence. The honorees were eleven women who have devoted their lives to the cause of peace and justice; from opposing nuclear weapons and ending domestic violence, to promoting nonviolent action and advocating peaceful co-existence. In addition, we honored all of the women who have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
...attended the Upper Skagit Library Foundation meeting and had a small open house at the new building!

Poetry Reading, April 26th, 5pm
Andrea Weiser will read new poems from her book in progress, Crazy Good and from published works, Thunder Blossom, River Bed, and co-inspired audio cd Sacred Breath, featuring Bellingham flutist Peter Ali. Weiser gains her inspiration from the heart of the wilderness and the wilderness of the heart. She has worked as an archaeologist, writer, and researcher for over 25 years in eight National Parks and six National Forests, including North Cascades National Park, as well as Mount Rainier and the Olympic mountains. Her works will be offered for sale at the reading.
Jason Miller is the publisher and editor of the Concrete Herald. His poetry and short stories have been published in Kinesis, Northwest Boulevard, and Passages Northwest. He is pulling together his first collection of poetry, and continues to work on his first novel, Riprap. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University.
Blackout Poetry Challenge
Grab a page from a newspaper, magazine, or book, and a pencil and a black sharpie, and create a Blackout Poem! Never attempted one before? Never heard of one before? Don’t worry, we have instructions, samples, and advice!
A blackout poem is one where you scan a page of print, pick out words that appeal to you, circle them to create the lines of a poem, then blackout the words you do not need with a black sharpie to create a poem. It is like searching in the dark for a treasure that you create! You can find directions at www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/john-depasquale/blackout-poetry, or come by the Library and pick them up.
Happy Poem Writing!
Disclaimer: the act of creating blackout poems can be highly addictive and you may become obsessed…Continue at your own risk!
