Events from yesterday in Florida
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As the nation, our hearts are heavy with sadness about the events that happened in Florida. I know I was glued to the Television yesterday, concerned for my fellow educators and their students. No person should have to experience this. We, as a nation, are struggling to make sense of something so horrific and traumatic.
We, at Grant, take safety and security very seriously. We are vigilant and proactive and have policies and procedures in place to ensure that our school environment is as safe as possible.
Below is a description of a few of the security policies in place at the school:
- Staff reviews school emergency procedures yearly.
- Staff receives training from the school nurse on an annual basis.
- All visitors to the school are required to check in at the office. They must sign in and wear a badge.
- We make every effort to know all our students and check in with them daily.
- We provide counseling services on site. Counselors are also available to consult with parents if needed.
- We investigate all disciplinary incidents, including searching students and/or belongings according to Petaluma City School guidelines.
- All students and staff participate in regular drills.
- Students with adult supervision may play on the back playground after school. The parent must provide supervision and be in sight of their children. Students who do not have supervision must vacate the playground.
There are also a few things that you can do to help us ensure the school is as safe as possible.
- Frequent visitors are still expected to follow sign-in procedures.
- Please do not be offended if school staff asks to see your visitors pass while you are in the building. This is an added measure to further ensure the safety of the school community.
- Be involved in your child's social media accounts and report any disturbing content.
- Keep in mind that some news coverage may not be appropriate for all children. Parents should consider their child's age and maturity level.
- It is important that parents engage children in discussions, and answer any questions that may arise about these incidents.
We all wish that we never had to discuss this topic with our children. It is important to reassure them that they are safe and cared for at school. Together we can continue to keep our school the safe and nurturing environment that we have all built together.
Please reach out to Mr. Everett or myself with questions.
Thank you,
Emily Todd
