SHS Parent and Guardian Update
Good afternoon! I hope each of you and your families are well. Below is our update for the next two weeks. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns do not hesitate to reach out to me. Thanks for reading and a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of our incredible SHS moms!
All the best. Sean
Prom and Graduation Season:
With prom and graduation season approaching, we have planned two unique events for juniors and seniors this year to be educated on the dangers of driving under the influence or driving while distracted. On Monday, May 13th, we will be hosting the Arrive Alive Event for the junior class. This is a simulation event that will allow students to virtually experience driving under the influence or distracted driving.
Students will be assigned a specific 40-minute time block throughout the day to attend the event and will receive a pass via Schoology to attend. This event is not mandatory and students may opt not to participate, if they so choose, at any time.
If you would like more information on the event itself, please visit the company website, https://arrivealivetour.com/unite/
On Friday, May 31st at 7:30 a.m., the senior class will be invited to attend our annual DWI Assembly. This community event simulates an accident from students driving under the influence. We partner with Ogden Police Department, Spencerport Fire Department, Gates Ambulance and Walker Brothers Funeral Home for the assembly. This event will take place in the front loop of the high school building and should take approximately 30 minutes.
If you have any questions about either of these events contact our district Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Kate Zobkiw, at 585.349.5245.
Senior Ball Tickets:
These are on sale until Wednesday, 5/22 and cost $50. They can be purchased at our bookstore.
Dance Season:
School Safety:
The Spencerport Central School District is now utilizing Tap App, a web-based security application designed to immediately notify staff and administrators of an emergency situation. When activated, the app generates an audible alert on district devices and cell phones and instantly contacts our security team, local authorities, and emergency responders. The sound is similar to an "Amber Alert".
We are notifying our families of this added security measure, so that you may share this information with your student in preparation for emergency drills. While this app will enhance our responsiveness, we do not want these drills to be unnecessarily stressful for our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Student Survey:
Tim O’Connor, Director of Students Services: We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. Our parents, staff and community have clearly communicated to us that mental health and student behavior must be a priority in our work. Building our social-emotional learning skills has been an integral part of this effort and we asked students in grades three through twelve to reflect on their own experiences and approaches to learning via an online survey in the fall. We will be giving this survey again during the week of May 28, 2024. The survey shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to complete. The SEL student survey data will be particularly helpful to ensure that the social and emotional learning actions are impactful, and decide whether to continue or change what we are doing. We are reflecting on our strengths and areas for growth based on the aggregate data, and will be using this to inform initiatives we will be putting into place in the future.
We are asking that all of our students in grades three through twelve participate in the surveys, as their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to their needs. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential, similar to other academic or attendance data.
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact our Director of Student Services, Tim O'Connor, at (585) 349-5151 or toconnor@spencerportschools.org.
Budget vote on May 21:
The 2024-25 school budget vote will take place from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, in our District Office building. Your vote matters, so please be sure to cast your ballot on the budget proposal, propositions, and school board candidates. This infographic outlines the main aspects of this year’s budget vote, and for full details, please visit the budget section of our website at this link, https://www.spencerportschools.org/district/2024-25_budget_section
End of the Year Dates:
The last full day of classes for the high school (grades 9-12) will be Thursday, June 13, 2024. After this date, students will report to the high school for regents’ exams only with the last exam being given on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. A regents’ exam calendar will be sent home in the near future.

RANGER Proud!
Speeches: English 10 classes with Ms. Ben-Dov and Mr. Interlichia (student teacher) and co-teachers Bridget Herrmann, Jody Bowens, Robin Allison, and Connor Julien would like to recognize the following students for their outstanding diligence when it came to perfecting a self-selected topic for a live speech presented to an audience of their peers. All of these students chose topics that were meaningful to their lives and incorporated personal anecdotes, researched evidence, and techniques such as parallel structure, repetition, imagery, strategic humor, alliteration, full circle, and strong diction.
These students recognized the need to incorporate these techniques to enhance their message (claim), call to action, and further their appeals to the audience. All of these students not only wrote and organized an effective speech, but also presented their speeches live to their classmates and were able to achieve a strong delivery.
All classes were mentored by Sean Watson (11th grade) and Lindsay Mallon (12th grade). Both of these students graciously gave up time to give their 10th grade speeches live to all classes and run a Q&A session as well as offered up time to work with students 1:1 during the crafting period.
Written and oral feedback reflect that peers and teachers were moved and motivated by the following students' speech writing and oratory skills:
Anthony Forbes, Camila Taveras Familia, Ashlin Hayes, Alexis Holmes, Jaxson Ryan, Payton Weaver, Athena Wallner, Kya Vargas, Slavik Maftey, Zachary Haines, Christian Specksgoor and Clover Von Slice.
Well done!!
Donation: Sophia Marron is a New Visions student focused on health services. As part of her senior project she raised money from students and parents to donate to Golisano Children’s Hospital. They asked her to do a check presentation to the hospital and below is a picture of that! Well done Sophia!
I hope everyone has a great weekend. All the best. Sean
