Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ February 26, 2024 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
We only have two more weeks till Spring Break. Students, please keep checking your grades and attendance. Grades for report cards are due March 8th. Report cards will be available on HAC by March 22nd.
Comm Arts Grade Guarantee Day
To encourage timely completion of student work and to try to prevent our teachers from being swamped with late work turned in on the last day of the marking period, Comm Arts implemented a Grade Guarantee Day for each of the first three marking periods of the year. The next Grade Guarantee Day is this Friday, March 1st.
Students can still turn in missing assignments after March 1st, but a teacher may not have enough time to grade those late submitted assignments for them to be reflected on the report card. After grade submission, teachers will grade these assignments and submit grade changes for those students. However, please note that the student's report card will reflect a failing grade, affecting UIL eligibility. Grade changes do not restore that eligibility. Students would regain eligibility if passing at the next 3-week grade check.
Juniors, please turn in your orange field trip permission forms to Ms. Barrera or Ms. Lewis by this Friday, March 1st.

StuCo is also looking for parent volunteers to help decorate and serve food. If you are interested, contact Mr. Trevino (robert.trevino@nisd.net). Also, we have our eye out for a helium tank for balloons if anyone has one that we can borrow on March 22nd and 23rd.
Highlights
Spanish Vocabulary
Last week, students in their Spanish classes made stretch bracelets using letters to form an adjective that describes them. They loved it!
Skills & Strategies Day
AET OnRamps
Students in the Arts and Entertainment OnRamps course are creating their own soundscape for a one-minute movie clip. UT provided the movie clips, and students could choose from various genres. They are responsible for creating the tone and emotion for the film and are their own Foley artist for five of the ten sounds. The students enjoyed making sounds and working in the digital audio working Bandlab. We can't wait to hear the finished product.
Interest Groups
Last week, seniors in AP Government played the role of interest group leaders and needed to find other groups who would help their public policy agenda through speed dating.

US Service Academy Day
The Office of Congressman Joaquin Castro is hosting its annual Service Academy Day on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 10 am to 1 pm, at the Holmes High School Auditorium. This event is open to all students in Bexar County and the surrounding areas. Representatives from all 5 Service Academies and people from the offices of Congressman Greg Casar, Congressman Tony Gonzales, Senator John Cornyn, and Senator Ted Cruz will be there to share information on their nomination process. Also, local Academy Alumni will attend to provide one-on-one coaching for students preparing for the application process.
Current Dual Students only (not new enrollment students)
Remember to enroll in dual credit courses; students must prove college readiness through reading/writing and math scores on the TSIA2 or PSAT (minimum scores shown on the graphic). Review your October 2023 PSAT Score Report available through College Board.
Spanish 3--must have passed the Spanish Dual Credit Eligibility Assessment given by their current Spanish 2 teacher. Students who passed the assessment received a letter indicating their eligibility.
English 3 and English 4--must meet the minimum college-readiness scores for TSIA2 ELAR or PSAT EBRW.
Math/Science courses--must meet the minimum college-readiness scores for TSIA2 ELAR and Math or PSAT EBRW and Math.
If you need to retake a portion of the TSIA2 to qualify for a dual credit course next school year, retesting is after spring break on the ComArts campus. TSIA2 testing for OnRamps courses is payable through Taft High School, not ComArts. TSIA2 payment of $14.53, payable through MySchool Bucks, is due by Friday, March 8th. Once Mrs. Barton receives payment confirmation, she will email you within 1-2 business days confirming a test date and room. Resources for preparing for the TSIA2 can be found on the ComArts website. If you are unsure if you need to retest or have other questions, please contact Mrs. Barton (jill.barton@nisd.net) as soon as possible!

Seniors
Class of 2024 graduates interested in AlamoPROMISE are encouraged to complete their admission and financial aid applications by the February 28th priority date. This date is set to encourage early submission to maximize student financial aid awards and is not a hard and fast deadline.
Applications completed after the February 28th priority date will be reviewed and considered for the program.
Also note that Save Your Seat is not required; to be an AlamoPROMISE Scholar, eligible graduating seniors simply need to be admitted to one of the Alamo Colleges, complete a Financial Aid application (and any documentation needed to award), and start taking classes at one of the Alamo Colleges in Fall 2024.
